This time, custom twins
I've learned a lot building up my 04 GTO and watching others build theirs. This time around I'll spend a lot less money by going with a custom twin turbo over a manufactured setup. The first manufacturer to have something for the new Camaro will IMO be STS...the same as it was with the GTO. The underhood turbos will come in down the road in a year or two. I see the GTO history repeating itself here. For the GTO I went strictly NA and at least on the track run with my twin brother pretty evenly since they have problems getting traction.
Along the way I've met someone who for the last two years has been developing a custom rear mounted twin turbo for his LS2 GTO. ...with e-bay turbos he's run the top LS2 twin turbo time recorded on LS1GTO, that being 10.6. This has been done on a stock bottom with the stock cam. This year he's pulling the LS2 and dropping in a 408 in an attempt to run in the 9s. The main issue his GTO has had has not been the turbos, its been the transmission. This year he's upgrading that too. I think the lessons learned here can be applied to the 5th gen.
So my thought is why buy from a big name manufacturer who spends all sorts of r&d money and then sells a high priced kit that offers no real benefit over a DIY setup. I'm thinking that working with my friend and the knowlage that he has learn on his GTO, I can prototype his setup as a very cost efficent rear mount twin turbo for a stock engine 5th gen.
This will not be the end all of end all twin turbos but one for the guy thats on a budget and doen't want to spend top dollar. I expect that it's really for the the resell market thats at least two to three years down the road. Now unlike the GTO which I paid full price for months after it first came out, I won't be buying this until the end of the year at the earliest since I learn my lesson there and this time will wait for GMs clearance sale. That gives me a full year after that to run the setup and iron out any problems before I copy it for others in th ebeginning of a resale market. So for now I'll wait, watch and learn while seeing what weak points others find with this car.
...to be continued
