When I back out of my drive I sometimes get a short scrapping sound and I can even feel it at times. At first I thought the bottom of the car was scraping but then I noticed at times it does it before I get to the end of the driveway and my driveway isn't even that steep. Has anyone else experienced this. It doesn't always happen and it does it worse on some days than others.

Does it happen when you apply the brakes? For some reason when I am backing up and I hit the brakes, the car shutters. It doesn't do it every time, and it seems to do it when I lightly press the brakes rather than pressing on them hard.

No I just get a quick scrapping sound then all is well. It doesn't always do it but when it does it does it one time then all is well.
look under your car to see if you can see scrapes

I've gotten this a few times. I haven't confirmed where it is coming from.

Id look at the driveshaft first, maybe there is a tight clearance issue.
Everything is the opposite in reverse, cars dont want to squat they want to lift.

mine does that too, but only when i am on a slanted driveway going backwards and if the car is cold (first start in a while). I never have the problem on flat surfaces reversing or slanted surfaces when warm.

Happened to me , i looked like a Keystone cop getting out and checking for damage. No damage I could see but something got scratched.
You guys should put your cars on a lift and look for scrapes... There might be a clearance issue.

i've had this happen 1 time too with my M6.
it goes on the lift thursday for more exhaust work, so i will look for what could be making that sound.......
i'll take pics if i find something. hope its not a throw out bearing problem.

That is exactly the same circumstance that mine happens in. I never notice it except in my driveway and only after the car had set for several hours. It never does it when it is warm. I hope this is something minor but I smell a recall coming. :(

my car was idling for about 15mins once i got to a friends house, then when i backed up(flat cement) after about 10ft it made the scraping sound, almost at the same time as i started to turn the steering wheel.

I get the same thing...backing out of the driveway. The old drum brake cars used to do this to reset the brake springs. Any chance this has something to do with the brakes?

Yesterday mine did it even when it was still warm. I had to run home to pick up something. Left the car running and when I started backing out it made that God aweful scraping sound. It does it only once and for a very short time so it definitely sounds like something trying to engage or disengage. I just don't think this is something normal. I do not know what you mean by m6 (manual 6?) Yes I have the manual 6 speed transmission if that was what you meant. I am going to call the dealership and setup an apointment to have it looked at.

Im pretty sure it has to do with the brakes, try backing out without stepping on the brakes. When i remember backing up and stepping on the brakes a bit it made the sound.
So go test out backing up with no brakes (on a slant), then report back, dont have my car at the moment.

I would guess it is the brakes too. Perhaps the caliper not lined up properly? Do you get the sound when not applying the brakes? That could mean a clutch problem right? Can't wait to hear what this really is from you guys. Does anyone with an auto tranny have the same prob.?

Could this in any way be related to the tailshaft issue that has put MN6 orders on constraint?

not sure, mine has only done it twice so for, but it seems like it does it when backing with the clutch 1/2 way engaged.

whoooooooa, that just through a MAJOR monkey wrench into the picture!
in one way i'm kinda relieved. i think it might be the brakes or just the limited slip in the rearend locking.
do you use your e-brake alot, as if it were an M6?

Let's see what happen's if everyone doesn't use the e-brake but put a chalk or something under the tire to see if it does it then as well.

Mine does it if I am not stepping on the brake hard enough when I put it into gear. If I press hard on the brake peddal, it does not happen. It is probaly the brakes, no problem.

I do not know if it is the brakes. Lately it hasn't done it very often. I do not use my emergency brakes and I have also felt it doing it when I park the car at work, meaning that the theory of it doing it only after it has sat awhile is busted. Like I said it does it randomly and sometimes the scraping sound is worse than other times. I have no clue as to the cause but I hope somone gets to the bottom of this very soon.

I haven't had the scrapping in a few weeks. Today I heard it briefly while backing out of my garage same as before. I backed out of my garage, put it in neutral and disengaged the clutch while I coasted down the short slope of my driveway. I was lightly on the brakes while turning the wheel.
I'm thinking the noise is from the brakes and it isn't anything to worry about.

Likewise, I have come to the conclusion that it is the brakes! Woohoo, nothing to worry about thank God. It only does it when I lightly touch the brakes as I am baking out and I feel it on the brake pedal. :D

i have had the same chatter??.. noise from my car but only once really in reverse. put the car in second going very slow (close to 1000rpms) and give it gas and see if it makes that sound. mine does it doing many different things but thats one way i can always make it do the noise. Im just curious if its the same kinda thing as mine.
Anyone got theirs checked out yet to see what the official reasons are? i know some could be different things but same noise.

mine stopped doing this a couple months back. no more problems with it making the noise anymore
