Ok.. so I don't quite have everything all together yet... BUT after yesterday I thought I would share...

Last Wednesday I made a trip down to MRT for a little help with my Air Intake Experiment - Part I.

So what is Part I? Part I is adding a stand alone IAT sensor and locating it in a spot that won't be so exposed to engine heat like the stock MAF/IAT sensor is.

So what's involved? Buying a IAT sensor and correct pig tail. Determine which two wires out of the five wires that go to the stock MAF/IAT sensor that are for the stock IAT. Cutting those wires and connecting the new pig tail. And finally, drilling and installing the new IAT sensor! Some quick snapshots:

Getting the wiring right!

New sensor in the air box lid:

Shop was 65 degrees but the stock IAT still read 97 degrees even though the car had been sitting for quite a while:

And new sensor is reading the air in the engine bay as 72 degrees.. which is more realistic... since the hood had been up for quite some time!

Everything all together!

So now your are asking... did it actually make a difference? Hmmmm... I'll let you decided... I took the car to the drag strip today... My best run has been 14.69 @ 94 MPH... Best 60' is 2.14...

Here is the slip from today... Left Lane - Car 260:

The air was in fact a bit better today than usual... but most importantly my IAT temps today were only 5 degrees above the outside air temp!! Typically the IAT temps are 15 to 20 degrees above the outside temp by the time I get the car staged! Looking at the data logs it looks like the car is running about 5 degrees more timing.... Needless to say i was geeked! LOL!

Roughly how much in parts would it cost to do this and do you have the part numbers handy?

I assume you just left the original IAT sensor in place?

This is a V6 correct?

manual?

TPIS offer a pigtail YEARS ago to do exactly this to the TPI engines. In 1996 it was a $8.95 upgrade.

On the TPI, the MAT sensor was installed UNDER the top plenum and was constantly heat soaked.

Typically reinstalled in the Airlid and was shown to lower the temp by 50 degrees. It was nuts; from 120 to about 75 degrees.

Nice job!!!!

ARGH! I can't believe it... i saved the box so I could get the part number... now I can't find the box! LOL!

Ok.. go to the local auto parts store and have them look up an "Air Charge Sensor" for a 1998 V8 Camaro... Should be a push-in type. I do know the pigtail GM Part #.. that's 12102620...

Total was around $30... pigtail was expensive at the local store... can probably be found cheaper else where...

Thanks!!!

Car is a 2LT RS automatic.... Funny thing is I get my absolute best times launching from idle with TC on... Any time I try to stall up the motor my 60' suffer, even if I hook... I'm thinking the torque management system is kicking in... LOL

Ok.. I finally found the box from the sensor... was a Car Quest 72-4502 temp sensor... was like $12...

No problem bud!

The TPIS system was just the pigtail, nothing else. You had to provide the intake plug and move the existing MAT sensor.

What are the color of the wires you cut? Mod looks good. Have you gotten any better data since your last post?:)

It's the BLUE and TAN wires...

No other data... I am putting the car on the dyno tomorrow...

Thanks for the info. They are both good mods that work well. I noticed in the pick that it looked like the sensor is in the box in the area above the filter?
Do you think it would work better below the filter? Say, in the tube that goes in to the filter bringing in the outside air? Thought that the air mite be cooler there? What you think?:D

We thought about the snorkel... but were concerned it might disrupt the air flow to much... also we did want to a good reading so we thought the area above the filter would be a good area... also the location on the top was a very easy, convenient place to locate the sensor... All in all I think it turned out to be a pretty good location...
