Hi all. New member with a question.

I've been spending most of my time in the 5th Gen forum keeping up with the latest development of the 2010 Camaro. I'm selling one of my cars to get the 5th gen. In the interim, I had a guy offer a trade for my car plus cash but I have no idea what to look for in the 1st gen series cars. It's a 69 Z/28 clone. Or so he says? Not that I don't trust the guy but I don't know what constitutes a 69 Z/28 clone.

He's asking $34,900 for his car. I was wondering what the approximate value of the car might be since it's a clone? I'm clueless about these types of cars even though I've always loved them.

Here's a link with some pics. He says the car has new paint, new interior and a fresh 350 with 11k on it. http://atlanta.craigslist.org/car/765148194.html

What are some of the problems I should look for? For instance, where can rust be easily spotted?

I was hoping to wait for the 5th Gen but If I can get a good deal on this car then I can always sell it (hopefully for a small profit) in late 2009 when the 5th Gen with a HUD comes out.

Your thoughts please and thanks in advance.

Interesting. The numbers work out to be roughly 25k and some change. Seems he's a little overpriced and looking to make a little money. Aren't we all though. :-)

Being it's a clone makes it even harder to determine if it is worth a penny over 27k IMO. He want's to trade fro my 1987 Porsche 930 Turbo Carrera and 5k. All without coming off of the price of his car and my coming down 4.5k. Hmmmmm. Maybe not such a good deal.

That's not a good deal, even a really good frame off wouldn't be worth that kind of money. A good condition documented Z/28 would only be worth slightly more than that. Being that its a clone, its NOT a Z/28 no matter what he says. It just means that he has a Z/28 type motor and badging. While it does look nice, I'd say its a 30K car tops, but some bone head seeking some nostalgia without knowing anything about cars will pay that much. I know how the clone game works, its happening a lot, I was constantly on the look out for them when I was interested in a 1965 GTO. People try to be very sneaky about it too. They are not the same, and they don't come anywhere close to the value. Sorry if this dashed hopes, it looks like a nice car, and if you understand going in what it is it could be a good car for the correct price.

A clone is someone who took a base model Camaro and bought everything to make it, for all intents and purposes, a Z-28. While I don't think there's anything wrong with that (not everyone can have an authentic Z) he's over-reaching if he thinks it's worth $34K.

Many 1st gen owners (especially those that just own a rusted out shell) really over-value their cars.

IMO (without seeing the car) I wouldn't pay a penny over $25K. No way, no how. I would pay more for a good resto-mod, like a formerly base V-6 car with an LS2, T56 and A/C...

Well in this case it wasn't even a true clone because the car has a 350 in it.

yeah....what kind of a clone is that...it doesn't even have the correct motor in it. It's probably a base model w/ z/28 emblems on it and some performance parts.

The problem is these days is that people watch those big dollar car auctions on TV and think their car is worth way more than it is. I saw a Z28 clone on one of those auctions go for over $40K...but it was essentially a Z/28...in every way except the vin #.
