HELP - Buying a 2002 Z28 - Have Questions???

Hey guys,

Hope you can help. I am probably going to buy a 2002 Camaro Z28 and I have some worries. It has 163,000 miles, although it looks as if is in perfect condition.

The engine is sparkling clean, the interior looks beautiful, the paint is perfect and the lines on the car are as straight as can be.

I took it for a test drive and everything sounded perfect. It is a 4-Speed auto and it shifted perfect and felt like it did from the factory.

As I always do, I am going to have a Chevrolet certified mechanic run a diagnostic on it.

I am just worried because it does have 163,000 miles.

The good thing is that the owner of the car is an original owner, that has obviously babied the car from the day he bought it. He worked at the airport which is a 70 mile roundtrip commute each day (hence the high mileage) so they are all freeway miles.

Should I be worried??? What should I look for??? It seems like such a great deal.

Thanks in advanced guys!!!

Stock? 163k isn't nothing. How much? Ls1s are going up again and finding them cheap is becoming a pita.

My 98Z28 is at about 248,500. I am shooting for 250,000 . The LS1 is as strong as ever, never had any issues with it. Was my DD for 12 years.

WOW for what? 4 months my avatar was not political and now it is?

Check the quality of the tranny fluid, look under the car for leaks of any kind. Oil filter housing tends to leak. Check quality of the Dexcool. Listen for any ticks while engine is at idle. Ask about service that has been done. Alternators tend to go out after a few years. If it's been well taken care of mileage shouldn't be an issue but you can play it up a bit and see if he will take less.

For $4400, I wouldn't worry. You said it looks good, runs good, and shifts good. Just go for it.

for $4400 if you don't get it let me know and I sure will! That's a good price and I wouldn't worry about the mileage. I abused the tar out of mine and the only problem I ever had was operator error. The only issues I knew of the fbods were leaky pinion seals (mine had when I got it) and there was a recall on the cats other than that it should be good to go.

If you get it don't do the same thing alot of people do when they buy new/old cars and replace every fluid in it. By all means change oil etc but leave the trans alone. ASide for that, get it, drive it, enjoy it.

I had a '97 Z28 and that LT1 + 6spd, it had high mileage and I picked it up for $4k several yrs ago, and it was still awesome. The Z28-LS1 you're looking should be even better. Go for it. sounds like a super find.

I think you'll be just fine with that LS1. My LT1 leaked oil like from all over, and I finally had to let it go with only 115,000 miles. It was fun while I had it, but it wasn't worth the money I would've had to pour into it at that point.

Good luck!
