I have a question for everyone

Now, I have no idea if this is true but, back in 1990 I sold my 78 firebird, V8, manual, 350hp car. I was young and stupid lol. Anyway, I was told after I sold it (by more than one person) that pontiac only made 100 firebirds in that year with a manual tranny. Needless to say I was sick to my stomach after hearing this and have been ever since. Like I said, I have no idea if that information is true, but does anyone on this forum know if this is true or not? If it is true than I will still be mad at myself for ever selling it. if it isnt true I will feel a lot better about it. I know it has been 19 years since i sold it, but it has always bothered me.

I'm assuming your 1978 Firebird was a base car with a 350ci V8. Being that 32,671 units were produce, I would say that it is likely there were more than 100 manual transmission cars produced. The highest hp rating for that year were the 6.6 liter (400ci) V8's in the Trans Am, rated at 220hp. My resource shows that 20 Black Special Edition Trans Ams built at the Van Nuys Plant had manual trannies. My source doesn't give a production breakdown for the other Firebirds (base, Esprit & Formula) produced just total production numbers. Hope this helps.

that does help, thanks, I really didnt think the car was 1 of 100. But, when several different people tell you that, you begin to wonder. Man, it still made me sick to sell it

Glad to help. Keep in mind that there were two production plants during that era, Norwood, and Van Nuys. As with the Black Special Edition Trans Ams, 20 manual trans equipped cars came out of Vany Nuys and 489 came out of Norwood. Then it is feasible that the production split for your Firebird could've produced a 100 manual trans cars at one or the other plant; but total production would've been higher. Only a true Firebird historian can say for certain. Of all the generations, the 2nd is by far my favorite.

maybe you can contact Pontiac Historical Services (PHS) and see if they can shed some brighter light on this. I did it years back when i had my '71 Firebird Formula 400/4-speed.
