The whole new car buying scene is a gimmick. They'll do what is needed to sell cars. Just depends on whether you're happy with the purchase. If ANYONE buys a car with investment ideas for future value, you're likely going to be real sorry later. The cost of maintaining one in "collectible" shape along with inflation will probably eat up most of any future value "gains" as it were regardless of the special or limited edition.
This is not to say there aren't exceptions, but you usually end up breaking even at best. The Transformers Edition is officially the first commercially available (orderable) "special edition" for the 5th gen, so that may go as a consideration for some collectibility, but I wouldn't bank too much on a decal appearance package being the next 69 ZL1 in value. BTW, if you want to order a TE car, the last day that you can is Jan 12. I know some dealers are acting like the TE is made of gold and are marking them up calling them "rare". WTF? They're only rare if nobody checks off the CTH option code.
The future market is the ONLY thing that will tell if something is a collectible or not, and unless you have a crystal ball, you're probably going to be better off investing that money in land or gold.
Buy the car for what you want and if you like it, that's all that matters. I can guarantee that anyone who thinks the Transformers Edition is a total waste and nobody would like it must live isolated in their own little world. I've yet to have anyone come up and tell me they didn't like it and it truly has been a rock star wherever the car goes. But I really don't care what others think. We bought the car because it's what we want and we're going to enjoy it. And so far, it's been great!
