tap shifting the auto

Probably a stupid question, but it's not addressed in the owner's manual. Is it OK to change from D (fully auto) to M (manual shift) while the car is moving? Also OK to go from M to D? I'm not getting any nasty messages or anything on from the drivers info center when I do this.

Thanks.

I honestly don't know. The only time that was done with my car is when I let a friend test drive my car and he started shifting in and out of M while driving. Kind of pissed me off a bit, but I survived. I almost always drive it in M from the start, so I don't do it.

Still legal in 16 states. It's happy. It's fun. It's Happy Fun Car.

Garage
Yeah. I do it when on the freeway for an extended run as that is the only time AFM engages on my car. When you go to M from D it still will only engage S by default. From there you would need to tap down to engage M.

You can switch on the fly to either, I've done it after accidentally tapping a shift button while in S mode. Had to change to D, then back to M, which puts it back into S mode. The auto pretty much prevents you from doing anything stupid, like shifting to a gear that's too high or low while in M mode, you tap the button and it refuses the shift base on certain parameters (gear, speed, accelerator position... etc)
