PAICE ASKING FOR BAN ON HYBRID IMPORTS
October 7, 2009
US trade officials say they will launch an investigation into whether Toyota violated patents held by a US hybrid technology company.
The Paice company, based in Bonita Springs, Florida, claims popular Toyota hybrids such as the third-generation Prius and the Lexus HS250h contain technology that violate its patents related to the propulsion of petrol-electric vehicles.
The company wants to ban the importation of Toyota hybrids into the US.
The US International Trade Commission, which investigates claims of trade violations, voted to launch the probe
'A judge is usually named and hearings held within 45 days'.
An ITC spokeswoman said a judge was usually named and hearings held within 45 days after the ITC decided to begin an investigation. If the ITC sides with Paice the trade body could issue penalties including a possible ban on the hybrids' import.
A Toyota representative was not immediately available to comment.
However, when Paice first complained to the ITC in September 2009, Toyota said it "has many patents on the hybrid technology and believes that it has strong defences against all of Paice's claims and that it will prevail in the ITC proceeding". - New Zealand Herald
