CARBONDALE -- Safety regulators have upped the number of deaths caused by Toyota's sticking gas pedal.
The death toll now stands at 34; that's up from 21 prior to the January recall.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has been flooded with complaints of sudden acceleration crashes.
Attorneys warn owners of those Toyota vehicles who don't heed the recall could be held liable in an accident.
Originally recall notices told drivers to bring in their vehicle for service only if they noticed something wrong.
Lawyer Michael Dempsy with the Beard Law Firm in Carbondale says it's better to avoid the chance of being called negligent.
"I would suggest you go and you have it checked out and you have it repaired if necessary. This is a danger to not only yourself but to other people on the road" says Dempsy.
Dempsey says when your Toyota does get checked out, get documentation that everything is in working order to avoid future liability.
