Mazda teams with Toyota, not Ford, for upcoming hybrid:

Mazda Motor Corp. on Monday took another step toward independent product development, agreeing to lease hybrid drivetrain technology from Toyota Motor Corp. instead of longtime U.S. partner Ford Motor Co.

How exactly is leasing from another manufacturer a step toward independent product development?

Isnt that like shopping at Target your whole life, then you decide you want to grow your own food so you shop at Walmart?

GM and Ford have been doing things like this with import automakers for decades.

I guess by keeping development in Japan? Being "pure" is important to the culture, so cutting out dirty U.S. development will be considered a positive step.
