The Crown referred to in the article isn't even offered as an equivalent in the US. It MAY be the equivalent of the Avalon, but it's different enough looking that I can't tell.

The Vitz referred to in the article is sold here. It looks just like a Yaris.

I wonder what engines these cars use, and if those engines are found in their US cars too, and if perhaps there will be future problems with Toyotas sold in the US.

2GR-FSE
The 2GR-FSE engine used in the 2006 Lexus IS 350 incorporates Toyota's D4-S twin injection system. This system combines gasoline direct injection with traditional port injection. Using direct injection and port injection simultaneously facilitates more precise mixing of air and fuel under low and medium load conditions for greater efficiency, while high load conditions dictate the use of direct injection alone for maximum power. The 2GR-FSE engine is rated at 315 hp (232 kW) at 6400 rpm and 377 Nm (277 ftlbf) at 4800 rpm. The 2GR-FSE has also been slated for possible use in the upcoming 2008 Toyota Supra (which is speculated to be released October 2007) but tuned to the output of 350 hp (261 kW) at 7000 rpm and 290 ftlbf (393 Nm) at 5000 rpm.

The 2GR-FSE was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list for 2006 and 2007.

Applications:

2006 Toyota Crown Athlete (Japan)
2006 Lexus GS 350 (Japan)
2006 Lexus GS 450h
2006 Lexus IS 350 (Japan and United States)
2007 Lexus GS 350 (United States)

3GR-FSE
The 3GR-FSE used in the 2006 Toyota Mark X adds gasoline direct injection (its name is "D-4") engine. The 3GR-FSE engine rated at 245 hp (188 kW) at 6,200 rpm and 314 Nm at 3600 rpm.

Applications:

2005 Toyota Mark X (Japan)
2005 Toyota Crown Royal (Japan)
2006 Lexus GS 300 (US and Europe)

4GR-FSE
The 4GR-FSE is a 2.5 L (2499 cc) version. Bore is 83.1 mm while stroke is reduced to 76.9 mm. Output is 204 hp (152 kW) at 6400 rpm with 265 Nm of torque at 4800 rpm. This version also features "dual-VVT-i", variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust cams and gasoline direct injection.

Applications:

2006 Lexus IS 250
2006 Toyota Crown Royal (Japan)
2006 Toyota Mark X (Japan)
2009 Toyota Matrix/Pontiac Vibe (United States)

1998 Camaro A4 7.06 @ 96.5 MPH NA 1.47 best 60ft

The Toyota Crown is on the S-series platform which is same as Lexus GS for north america

The GS 300 featured a direct-injection engine for all markets except for Continental Asia, excluding Singapore. The 3.0 L engine was also found in the Toyota Mark X as well as the Zero Toyota Crown.

So it sounds like the US-spec Lexus GS & IS are vulnerable to similar problems then.

Time will tell!
