Lutz speculates Volt could cost as much as $48K

$48K - are they serious?

===================================

When it comes to his company's struggles to meet the CAFE standard of 2020, GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz can always be counted on for a good quote. Just recently he declared that GM will vastly increase its hybrid lineup by 2015, then nearly committed automotive heresy by suggesting the Camaro ponycar could one day come with a four-cylinder engine. And now Maximum Bob is back: in a recent article for MSNBC Lutz indicated the production version of the Volt plug-in hybrid might wind up costing a bit more than previously stated -- around $18,000 more.

Since being unveiled at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, GM's highly anticipated vision for a greener future has experienced battery problems and delayed release dates, but until now the maker had been aiming for a $30,000 target price. However according to Lutz development costs for the Volt have been far higher than expected, and a price of $48,000 might be more realistic. He indicated the car could possibly sticker for $40,000 if GM sold it at cost, but the original goal could only be met with substantial federal tax incentives.

That makes the Cobalt a far better value. Except for the tree huggers I guess.

I could see the Govt. offering big tax breaks for a few years to get the ball rolling.

They did it with other cars in the past.

If true, that will be the demise of that vehicle. All savings will be lost on battery replacement down the road at the tune of lots of $$$$$$!
