Possible bun warmer issue

We've had a bit of a cold snap out here in the Bay Area the last several days so I've been using the seat warmers. I've noticed that when you turn them on they go to full power (2 lit LEDs) by default. What doesn't seem right to me is that, if you don't manually press the button again to take it to half power (1 lit LED), it will continue heating the seat until your butt is literally what's cooking for dinner. The seems like a hazardous situation; shouldn't it go to half-power after some time (like my Benz did) or shut itself off before it gets seriously hot?

Anyway I was driving in slow moving highway commute traffic this morning with the seat warmer on full, listening to my iPod, when without even a shudder the instrument cluster, the seat warmer, AND the engine lost power. However, the radio and iPod continued playing... it was actually about 10 seconds before I realized the car wasn't running. Could this have been caused by a problem with the seat warmer circuitry??

Need some ideas here, I'm afraid to use the seat warmer now.

TIA.

Yikes!! I have been using mine as well. But as you say, things get a little toasty right quick and I find myself turning it down to the 1 setting pretty quickly.

So mine has never been on high (2) for more the what I would guess is 5-10 mins.

Do post up with what, if anything, you find out on this. Inquiring minds need to know.

I've always been annoyed with my Fiance's G6 seat warmers. They work exactly the same... IMO, they should turn on in the lower setting. When you turn your A/C on, does it first start out ice cold? No.

As for having them turn off automatically (like the rear defroster?)... not sure about that one. What if you're REALLY cold?

The OP said, "The seems like a hazardous situation; shouldn't it go to half-power after some time (like my Benz did) or shut itself off before it gets seriously hot?"

It should go to the lower setting of the two or a programmed reduced setting like my '08 Camry does. It will get you toasty and then reduce power (heat) to a lower level automatically and maintain at that lower level until you turn it off.

I'll have them check for codes during my next oil change. The last thing I want is to lead them on a wild goose chase running diagnostics on everything and taking my seats apart. I'm a daring doer, so I'll probably try to reproduce this problem tomorrow morning.

jeez, i thought the first setting was back and butt and the second setting was just butt. personally when im sitting on my butt it stays plenty warm but id love to be able to just have my back be warmed especially on road trips as it feels good on my back.

After 15-20 minutes on the first setting, your butt will be darned near scorching hot. At least that's my experience.

Btw, I was not able to reproduce the problem this morning, but that could be because I didn't also have the hot air on.
