What did I do to my Camaro lately?...

Rearview camera!!

Nice little mod using a factory Gentex mirror and with the sensors, it should make parking/backing up a lot easier with this fat-butted car. Mounted the camera insde the bumper cover with 3M automotive emblem tape, so it should hold well. Total time for install was around a tad over 2 hours.

The graininess of the mirror pic seems odd--live and in person, it looks crystal clear.

I can't take credit for it. Just got the idea from Mr. Ofer over at Camaro5. (I know some of you won't go there, but that's on you). Also, instructions and vids from brandmotion.

He sells it in kit form. Complete kit, with mirror/color camera/customized harness starting at $460.

There's a writeup on it over at C5 with pics and everything. I pretty much followed his lead.

brandmotion sells complete kits with all GM stuff. $849. Ouch.

2010-2012 Camaro Rear View Back Up Cameras - Complete Kit 1018-9540

video install by brandmotion - keep in mind, they have no issue drilling. I just cut a small slit for the wires in the rear taillight grommet and used the same hole.

brandmotion instructions (pretty good):

A couple of notes- it's relatively painless to do, but the part where it says to remove the kickpanel before the dash side panel...well, there's actually a clip on the top rear part of the kickpanel that slides under the side panel flange (you'll see what I mean if you look) and it's likely easier to take the sill cover off, then the dash side panel off before the kick panel.

Also, when taking the tether off the A-pillar cover, I didn't want to bend out the cover too far and possibly kink it, so it was a bit tight with fat fingers. You're in the near vicinity of the air bag, so you can't be ham-handed in there.

One thing I think got missed in the writeups, (or at least I missed it) is on the side trunk panel removal, there's a push pin needing to be removed about the middle top and a screw on plastic retainer on the middle bottom (roll the carpet back toward the middle to make it easier.

Also, I found out that the license plate lamps aren't exactly "centered". If you mounted the camera exactly in the middle of the lamp openings, the camera would be off center a bit to the driver's side. I trimmed my camera mount to make it fit pretty much dead center as I like to keep things "even". Can hardly notice the backup camera unless you're really looking.
