broken headlight, how to protect the HID

I was hit this morning on my way to work in my 2010 RS. Luckily it was low speed and only cosmetic damage to front of car, but it did take out a good size piece of the headlight exposing the HID to the elements.

It will be a few days before all the insurance adjusters, etc get all the process going and I need to know what to do to protect the headlight. It currently works, but I will be traveling later today and there is a chance of rain this weekend.

Can I just cover the broken lens with clear packing tape to protect it?

Easiest thing would be clear packing tape. You will have to do "strips" of the tape most likely so just make sure they overlap at least 1/2 inch.

The best thing would be ClearBra or material similar. You could call tint/paint protection shops to see if they have scraps....
