DDay 2: 4/1/09 : Computer Attack

If you haven't heard about it,

Malware creators love to target April Fool's Day with their wares, and the latest worm, called Conficker C, could be one of the most damaging attacks we've seen in years.

Conficker first bubbled up in late 2008 and began making headlines in January as known infections topped 9 million computers. Now in its third variant, Conficker C, the worm has grown incredibly complicated, powerful, and virulent... though no one is quite sure exactly what it will do when D-Day arrives.

Tomorrow -- April 1 -- is D-Day for Conficker, as whatever nasty payload it's packing is currently set to activate. What happens come midnight is a mystery: Will it turn the millions of infected computers into spam-sending zombie robots? Or will it start capturing everything you type -- passwords, credit card numbers, etc. -- and send that information back to its masters?

No one knows, but we'll probably find out soon.

Or not. As Slate notes, Conficker is scheduled to go "live" on April 1, but whoever's controlling it could choose not to wreak havoc but instead do absolutely nothing, waiting for a time when there's less heat. They can do this because the way Conficker is designed is extremely clever: Rather than containing a list of specific, static instructions, Conficker reaches out to the web to receive updated marching orders via a huge list of websites it creates. Conficker.C -- the latest bad boy -- will start checking 50,000 different semi-randomly-generated sites a day looking for instructions, so there's no way to shut down all of them. If just one of those sites goes live with legitimate instructions, Conficker keeps on trucking.

I read this last week, and was gonna post it, but my procrastination kicked in. I probably won't be on tomorrow. Will allow me to get better things done. Like beating Call of Duty. Just got new Mcafee and everything's updated, so we should be secured at the house. We could call it PCpolcalypse. lol

Thx for the post.

I've never understood the point of a virus. Why in the world would anyone care enough to create one? What purpose does it have? It doesn't do anything positive for anyone other than giving the creator satisfaction that they ruined... everything?

Well I just found out about it when I posted this. lol.

I just wish people can do something other than making viruses in all of their free time.

They could spend that time raising puppies or sleeping. Or getting a mate.

The part I'm not clear about was how this payload was delivered to the victim hosts? Was it loaded in the background by nasty popup ads or piggy-backed onto spyware/adware? It uses malware hooks to hide on the victim hosts, so maybe it was loaded via Internet Explorer addon courtesy of any number of malicious popup ads.

just make sure your computer is all up-to-date and you'll be fine. It'll probably end up being an april fools day prank anyway.

This one was kinda scary until a couple days ago when researchers realized that it was actually easy to spot and defeat. As Octane posted, it has been hyped because of the number of PCs that have been infected, but that is a total number of infections, not the total number that are *currently* infected. As with most shadowy viruses with a deadline payload (this ones actually a "phone home" date of 1 April) in the past, we can only hope that this one is not badly malicious or as widespread as some cub reporters would have people believe. If you're really worried, turn off your PC tonight, and wait until you hear some news reports tomorrow to see if it really did anything. Or you can continue to live internet life as normal and not bow down to cyber terrorists.
