Former GTO owners that are now 5thgen owners

Is the 5th gen Camaro that much better then your 04-06 GTO. I was looking for a 05 or 06 GTO a few months ago but the wife talked me into buying my daughter a car. I am thinking of waiting on a new camaro $32K and getting a $16kish 05 GTO.

While I don't own a 5th gen, I will base my opinion on my seat time driving a 1SS at Carlsile versus owning a 2005 GTO.

You can tell the Camaro is a bit heavier than the GTO. The clutch action is lighter on the Camaro [I dislike this]. The ride is better on the Camaro, but it still feels like a smooth-driving sedan. Wheelhop is not prevalent like it is on the GTO. Power wise, I'd say they feel about the same.

I'd say a GTO is one of the best performance bargains out there. The negative to the GTO is the suspension and little electronic gremlins.

i'm with demon. we traded in our 05 GTO for the 10 Camaro. i feel that they ride and drive very similar... although the crazy thing is that the Camaro feels more balanced in the turns and doesn't push as bad... but we'll find out for sure at the autoX in a couple of weeks. the GTO used to wheel hop like a sum***** at the drag strip, but the Camaro doesn't at all (it just spins the snot out of the tires instead). power wise, they do feel very comparable, but the Camaro is definitely quicker.

the Camaro certainly gets a LOT more positive attention than our GTO ever did. that was a very unloved and misunderstood car by many. it's a shame really cuz the GTO's were AWESOME IMHO.

i think either choice would be a good one. it just depends on if you want something new or used... and "all the rage" or "misunderstood."

Honestly, after my drive at Carlisle, some of the excitement wore off. I've been looking for a particular 2002 Z28 (I always wanted to build a crazy 4th gen), but I haven't entirely wrote of the 5th gen. Part of what I didn't like about the GTO is still there in the Camaro - the softness (and it's just HUGE).

I am hoping to see what is in store for 2011, if anything. I really hope they get rid of the sharkfin. That is honestly my #1 problem with the vehicle at the moment. The "afterthought" placement of the reverse lights is a close 2nd. I'll drive some more and see more around before I order. I am also going to wait for the hype to die down a bit - I don't need to be first on the block.

Oh, and I am very torn between 1SS and 2SS. I really liked the cloth seats, but my dream car in HS was a loaded LS1 SS. Oh, how difficult...

I think that the LS3 after driving a LS2 feels a bit like driving a LT1 and then driving a LS1. You know the LS1 is faster, but the way the LT1 builds power just throws off your senses a bit.

My biggest praise is the way the rear wheels stay planted. I was SOOOO happy with the way the tires actually SPUN instead of the rear end hopping out of the back of the car when I launched it. I didn't do it easy, either. They let me launch it twice... shhhhh don't tell Scott!

If ya like auto crossing the gto rear sucks with sticky tires on it. The car did too much one wheel peels in the turns and keep the one wheel peel going too far out of the turns. This was the breaking point for me and put me in favor of selling the gto. I also couldn't stand the body roll and rear bounce in the gto. The Camaro is a much tighter car in these areas.

You guys got me thinking I might drive the GTO for a couple years and wait for the convert camaro. I miss my convert 96 Z28 soooo much. I think its either a GTO or an 05 CTS-V. You can get them for the low 20's now.

CTSV is nice. I've never had any experience with them. Just watch the rear end!

I'd also go with a 06/07 for the LS2.
