A Public Service Announcement to IT folks

I am on my 3rd server in as many months that has had multiple drives fail in a RAID 1 or 5 array. I didn't set any of them up originally, but it's still very frustrating.

(to those non techie's, HDs in these types of raid arrays will still work if one fails, and you will still have all your data, but not if more than one.)

Go check your RAIDs, make sure it is configured to beep like hell or email you or something if a drive fails so they don't just sit there until another one fails...

My servers are all set to send me emails that hit my online accounts and phone if so much as a warning message goes to the console. I've always had single drive failures in RAID arrrays (1, 10, and 5) but never had a multiple drive failure in those. One way I avoid this is to yank all the drives when I get a new server, check the serial numbers and try to separate consecutive numbers to separate servers or separate logical drives on the same server.

I always love explaining to people that RAID5 is not a valid backup solution.

Yeah, it's a "backup solution" that requires a backup solution. It allows for redundancy in a stripe set, nothing more. Always keep your firmware up to date, and waste no time replacing failed disks (or re-seating inconsistent drives).
