Adventures in maintaining a $500 car
REALLY!?! .150" over on the maximum thickness of a front brake rotor!
OK, I know it's my own fault for buying Chinese made parts from Auto?
The combination of .150" over on the thickness and new brake pads made for some major grindage between the wheel and caliper. I know the proper way to correct this would have been to take the rotor and have it turned but that wasn't an option this time around. luckily the pads I was replacing had better than 50% life left so I reused them... the rotors had to be replaced, they were .400" under the minimum thickness spec. the next time I have to change the pads I'll have the rotor tuned (if it hasn't worn into spec by then).
In the course of my job searches I'm seeing an encouraging number of companies that are bringing manufacturing back to US soil. This incident with the brake rotor is one of the reasons why... quality issues are outweighing profit advantages of reduced wages.
