DUI+no seatbelt claims another Camaro driver

Brooks man killed in weekend DUI crash | Davis Enterprise

Authorities say alcohol was to blame for a pair of weekend crashes, one of them killing a Brooks man, the other sending a Davis man to the hospital.

The first crash occurred at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday on County Road 23 west of County Road 89 south of Madison, where 21-year-old Joel Lowell struck a walnut tree after losing control of his 2010 Chevy Camaro, California Highway Patrol Officer Cindy Leal said.

Lowell, who was not wearing a seat belt, suffered fatal injuries after being ejected from the car and was pronounced dead at the scene, Leal said. Investigating officers said alcohol and speed also were factors in the crash.

The next morning, at about 5 a.m. Sunday, 21-year-old Brian Portillo of Davis was injured when he made an unsafe turning movement with his 1999 Honda Accord and rolled his car on County Road 31 west of County Road 97, Leal said.

Portillo was taken to Sutter Davis Hospital for treatment of bruises to his hips, chest pain and forehead contusions, Leal said. He was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and released to the hospital pending his recovery

I agree, drinking & driving and not wearing a seat belt are choices. Unfortunately innocent people sometimes pay the prices for others poor choices.

terrible story
wish all of that had not happened
we can ask: will people ever learn
unfortunately, many people will never learn
just think of the pain their loved ones are feeling now
so here my question
when will they start making cars, that do not run until you are wearing your seatbelt properly, and that do not run, if there is any alcohol or other drugs in the car
technically no problem to build cars that way
and please keep in mind
no one wanted anti lock brakes, traction control, stabili track, electronic helpers everywhere 30 years ago
today: we are not even thinking of it: all these helpers safe lifes.
so please: build them that way
(and keep in mind: we all were young and acted not best in certain situations...
if machines can be built the way, that they keep us alive when we are acting not responsibly enough, please build them (as we are building a normal L99 v8 camaro today that has more power than a big block vette in the late sixties))
