Five Vedco Employees Receive Camaro Surprise

Five Vedco Employees Receive Free Sports Cars -

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Five employees from veterinary supplier Vedco in St. Joseph got the surprise of a lifetime Monday morning when they were presented with brand-new sports cars.

Five Chevrolet Camaros lined the front parking lot when the company's 40 employees got to work.

None of them knew what they were really for.

They came from the personal collection of Mark Pieloch from Pharma-Chemie, one of Vedco's long-time suppliers.

"I wanted to do something special for the people who are down in the trenches doing the work day-to-day."

At a small ceremony at 8:00 a.m., Pieloch presented 20-year-old sports cars, kept in factory-new condition in his Nebraska museum, to Vedco's longest-tenured employees.

Among them is Debbie Steeby, who's been with the company the longest.

"Oh my gosh! I can't form it into words, I can't believe it. I've literally never won anything; I'm not lucky," Steeby said, fighting back a few tears. "I can't wait to tell my family. I can't wait to tell my husband and my daughter. They're not going to believe it. And what a great Monday! Mondays usually stink!"

Kevin Barnett has worked for Vedco since 1989, and he got a red Camaro convertible from that same year, a car with only 30 miles on it.

"It's just unbelievable that they'd be doing that for us older employees. We've put a lot of time and effort into this company. It's a great reward," Barnett said.

Their boss Craig Campbell says Vedco tries to reward its employees, but never like this.

"It's the most gratifying thing we've had here in my career in veterinary materials," Campbell said.

The five employees who received the cars have around 110 years in combined experience.

Pieloch says he's happy to give them cars from his personal collection.

"I just saw the two ladies put the convertible top down and take off and man their smiles were five inches long. I'm glad we did this Monday morning rather than Friday afternoon. Otherwise, they'd say 'See ya on Monday!'" Pieloch said
