Need some telescope info

I'm looking to get my son a new telescope for christmas. We got him a cheapie wally world one a while back that he's loved so I want to graduate to something bigger and better. Thing is I don't know much about the different options on them. Such as mirrored etc. I'm wanting something hopefully less than $250 if possible but something that actually can see inside craters in the moon and good views of Saturn, Jupiter, and deep space stuff like the horse head nebulae etc. Any recommendations on type, brand and optic size would be greatly helpful. If one of the automated ones are in this price range I'd prefer it but I'd rather have the better optic vs one that auto finds. Any one here a conisseur on telescopes?
