Set my son up with his first set of real tools.

I swore I wouldn't go anywhere near any stores on Black Friday, but I broke down and took advantage of some sweet deals on Kobalt tools at Lowes. Picked up a 138 piece mechanics tool set (ľ, ⅜, Ĺ drive ratchets and a nice assortment of sockets along with an 8 piece open/box end SAE/metric wrenches), a 10 piece pliers set and a 20 piece screwdriver set for my son for his 16th birthday. Got everything for right around $100.

I was stoked to read that Kobalt tools are made by Snap-on... that didn't last long once I dug a little deeper and found out that almost all Snap-on tools are Chinese/Taiwanese. Even with the ratchets, sockets and wrenches being Taiwanese and the pliers being Chinese, he has a better set of tools than I had at 16. At least the screwdriversare American made (with domestic and foreign materials).

Brings back memories of me using my Dad's tools and pirating the lawn mower engine for my go-cart. It was all good til I got escorted home for doing 45 in a 25! I was 8...

Tools are like a box of chocolates. You never know what is going to happen when you open that box!

Next year he'll be attending vocational high school, studying auto mechanics. After that his plan is to attend the University of Northwestern Ohio, which offers an associates degree in Applied Technologies - High Performance Motorsports.

I've still got, and use, some of my 1st cheap Chinese and Indian tools.
Costco sells a set of Craftsman tools, btw.

I like the feel and heft of the older Craftsman tools, though.

If you have Craftsman wrenches that are less than 5 years old (the time the Kmart has owned Sears) at the very least they were machined in the US from Chinese forgings. Like most things, its nearly impossible to walk into a store and find a complete line of tools that are made in the USA... even the "tool truck" tool companies use Chinese or Taiwanese materials to machine thief tools from, if they even machine them in the US.

I have Craftsman, Cornwell, Kennedy, Starrett & Mitutoyo,
I think all are resourced out of the US, some are better quality than others tho.
