How many of you were lucky enough to have a Camaro as your first car?
I learned to drive with a 94 Ford Taurus, but my first car was 89 IROC. 5.7 with t-tops. I regret selling it to this day. It sure was a lot of fun.
When I was really young, I remember seeing cars that the windows "rolled into the roof". I never understood how that worked. I supposedly told my babysitter that I wanted a red Camaro convertible (this was around 87). In the spring of '99, I started looking for any 3rd generation Camaro with t-tops. I found a really clean 88 at a local used car dealer. Red with silver ground effects. It was a 2.8 5 speed. I wanted it SOOOOO bad, but then I started learning more about the IROC's. At first, I didn't care if it was a 305 L03 (or was it LG4?) with 140hp or the "monster" L98/B2L with 220hp, I just wanted an IROC. Then after becoming addicted to CamaroZ28.com, I realized nothing less than the 5.7 would satisfy me. It was September of '99 when I was about an hour away from home and I saw it. I was in love with this black IROC. It was a hassle to get it bought, and my Uncle had to drive it home (my mom wouldn't let me drive it that far - she thought I'd kill myself). I was disappointed at first because it wouldn't start back up once it was in the driveway. After some messing around, it seemed there was a vacuum leak when you'd leave the heater on and turn the car off. If you always turned the heater off, it would be fine. I never figured out the problem. Many many many other memories from that car, but I won't bore you all with them!
I then went through cars in this order...
93 Mustang GT
00 Camaro SS
94 Grand Cherokee
and my current car, 05 GTO
I remember checking out a brand new Bright Rally Red 2000 SS at the local Chevy dealer in the spring of 2000. I thought I was so cool pulling in there with my IROC. I tried to get a test drive by telling them my parents would buy me a SS if I started with my IROC. It didn't work, but I did walk out of there with a brochure (that I still have).
Ordering a new SS is going to be a dream that I never thought possible.
