Back up camera retrofit, what are some good options?

Hi all,

First off let me introduce myself. New to the forum, my name is Talon, and I'll be picking up my 1800 mile (!) 2010 2SS/RS tomorrow morning from the previous owner.

My first post concerns my first planned mod project. I'm trying to decide between installing the factory option backup camera or one of the less expensive aftermarket versions like the Smartmirror, though that would duplicate the phone connectivity I already have on the steering wheel I think.

I found one short thread discussing this but not a lot of detail. If anyone out there has covered this ground before I'd appreciate any advice on cameras, mirror displays, or dash mounted displays.

Thanks! Talon (Rednblak)

I installed a Pionner touch screen navi/backup cam. The navi is awesome especially since the kit that i bought is fully intergrated with my locks, air conditioning, power steering ect. The back up cam however isnt great (tough to see while backing up at night). I have an SS now and the back up cam is factory (much better). I was still able to install my navi in the new car though.

If you have them set properly, you don't have to adjust them. Make it so you can see your blind spots. You don't need to see the side of the car in the mirrors. If you NEED to for some reason, all you need to do is shift your head. It's much better to see your blind spots though. Once I got my mirrors adjusted correctly, I didn't worry about blind spots anymore. People who test drive this car always think it has ****ty visibility, which is only true if you don't adjust everything properly.

The hard part is to keep your mirriors adjusted, since two of us drive mine then I always have to readjust mine..

GM has had driver-selectable settings for years on the Caddys.

Yes, I do adjust for blind spots while driving, but when backing into my narrow driveway at an angle to lower the chance of scraping the front end on the concrete I lower the angle of the passenger side mirror so I can align my rear wheel with the edge of the drive and angle her in. I just have to remember to readjust it when I'm parked or it's still like that for the next trip!

I've had one of the cheaper wireless cams for a month or two now. I am pleased with it considering it was only $100.00. I do get some horizontal interference lines frequently but you can still see good enough even when that happens. I cut a notch out of the rubber tray to hold the display unit it place.
