Cams

Hi I just installed a new catback system and a new Cai, and thinking about putting on long tube headers and a bad ass choppy sounding cam. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on some good headers and cams I could pick up? Also a question on fuel additives like octane booster or injection cleaner. Good or bad??

Plenty of header choices out there as well as cams. Set a budget first and then start shopping. You dont want to big of a cam in there or it will lag a bit on the bottom end. The intake runners on the heads are big. Headers .. pic your flavor but its all about the budget.. ARH are top of the line and the cost reflects it but there are none better.. there is mild steel and cheap knock offs made in china as well.. ... its all about how much money you have to spend. You dont need booster

Ok thanks, well I'm pretty much new and at the beginning here, is there like a mass website besides eBay to find headers or cams? I'm looking for something on the cheaper side, but not so much that it lacks performance but also doesn't break the bank.

If I may be so bold as to start with our vendors here for your performance needs. Ebay doesn't keep this site running but our vendors do and they all offer what you're looking for. As our colleague from Oregon stated it's all about your budget. You can spend as little as $400 for headers or as much as $2000. Custom cams will run $400 to $500. Will you be doing the work yourself?

Ok, I will take a look at the vendors here, and personal work? Headers yes that's easy, cams, not so much, I really don't trust anyone around here with my vehicle. I live on base in 29 palms, ca I mean I could do it myself, but it would be a slow process and, I don't know if it will damage any warrenty I have. If I were to do my own work is there any DIY instructions/videos out there?

cams arent that hard to install but it is a bit time consuming..your taking the front engoine over off aso look at it and see all that is in the way.

The cam alone will void your warranty and so will headers depending on who you get for a service rep

There are a few vendos on here that can help you( they pay the bills) >>>>>>>>>>>

If your not going to spend $1,300 to $1,500 on a American Racing Header or a Kooks header, then I would recommend the XS Power header. Its cheaper and made out of a better grade of stainless steel than the others. If your adding a cam I would get the 1 7/8". 1 3/4" would work fine but you might get the bug for a blower so get the bigger header just to be safe. If the XS Power header is too expensive for you I would go with Headman or Pacesetter at 1 3/4" and have the outside ceramic coated.

The Livernois Stage 2C cam is the kind of cam your looking for. Good rwhp numbers, nice chop and has good street manners. There are lots of others. I wouldn't go over .620 on the lift and not more than 225 for the intake and 235 on the exhaust. LSA between 117 to 121 for good street manners.

If you plan on installing a Supercharger some day the 2c cam will work but I would recommend something different. Let me know if you want a blower friendly cam and I will post some specs. There is a guy named Patrick G who is one of the best at spec'en out a cam. If you want a custom cam PM me and I will give you his contact info.

Thanks I appreciate it yeah right now I'm just looking for some decent headers I've see then pacesetters but not the headman or xs power so ill take a look at them, thanks again. I think for now I'm going to wait on the cams and possably a supercharger for when k get back from deployment

Good bits of wisdom here. On cam choice if I had to do it over again I'd spec one out rather than do an off the shelf grind. Cookie cutters work but you'd probably get better results for one spec'd out for you by someone with expertise in that area.

I used LS1howto.com as a DIY guide for mine (4thgen) which is different up to the engine itself which is mostly the same (did it on an LS1 and LS2). Just gotta watch that **** O ring on the oil pickup tube, it's a PITA to get on without pinching it, did it on both the Camaro and GTO.
