Car running fat ??

I need some help here...I have a 2012 2SS/RS Convertible and it seems to be running fat ?? I have black exhaust showing up on the back end just above the chrome outlets...It does this on both sides...I am running 93Octane gas in it...Stock motor, no changes...26,000 miles on it...any idea why it would do this ?? Can't imagine it needs a tune up already... help

They run a bit fat stock. Especially when cold. Running 93 if not tuned to take advantage of it (timing etc) nets a slower/less complete burn. This will add to your "content" on the back of the car. I had more showing when running 91 octane on a "less then ideal" tune vs now on 93 with a perfect tune....

Try running 91 for a spell....

Why do they recommend 93 then? Only 6000 miles on mine now ... something to watch I guess.

Hmm, OP I agree with everyone that these cars come from the factory with room to lean out. But that is probably due to the fact that the factory has to design vehicles to run well in every climate. And basically we have extremes on both sides. You have mountains in the Winter that get super cold and then deserts in the Summer that get super hot. So they are tuned with wiggle room. However I don't think you should be seeing black smoke and smudge like that. I mean, if that were normal then every SS would have that around their tail-pipes. I think something is wrong. Are you seeing any CELs? If I were you I'd take it in and have it looked at. My Mustang GT ran rich like a pig with blow thru mufflers and an O/R X-pipe. Yet I never saw that much smudge on my bumper. And I hardly ever washed the thing. A tune will lean it out and give you more performance. But I'd say go have it looked at first. Just to make sure something isn't wrong.

From the factory, the cars are about 11.5 at wide open throttle.

To rich the car feels fat ( like you have ). I like to keep my calibrated cars more on the rich side for safety and torque. I target 12.5 for WOT. Im ok with leaving HP on the table for the safety of the motor.

Check out your car on our facebook page.

thinking back on it, you are probably right, out of town, so I can't look to see if 2012 says something different, but thinking about it, maybe it was 91 or better ... I just remember passing on a 92 because a 93 was right up the road for the same price. Seems like around here choices go 87-89-93 most of the time, but I think Sunoco might have 91 (at the same price as 93 at Shell)
