With the departure of the getting-long-in-the-tooth Chevrolet TrailBlazer mid-size SUV (and its counterpart the GMC Envoy) looming, GM will launch a Chevrolet crossover on the Lambda platform (which underpins the existing Saturn Outlook, GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave). The new Chevrolet will be called the Traverse in the US when it shows up in dealers starting in 3rd Quarter 2008.

It will be built at GM’s assembly plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee and the target sales goal is 100,000 units per year.

GM’s other crossover models have been well received. Monthly sales for the new Outlook and Arcadia have more than doubled since the beginning of last year. Their popularity has been increasing mostly because they offer owners a vehicle with car-like dynamics and fuel-efficiency but with the interior space of traditional SUVs, highly sought after traits in a world of rising fuel prices and increasingly congested cities.

Could hybrid versions of these new crossovers be in the future? I think that would be welcomed.
