Contract talks between the UAW and American Axle and Manufacturing Inc. officially began Wednesday, as the two sides approach a February deadline to reach a contract that covers about 4,000 workers at five plants in Michigan and New York. Union local presidents and other local leaders from those factories were in Detroit for the talks with the company's negotiating team.
