My 2012 RS/SS Convertible developed jerky shifting at 85,000 miles (yes, I drive it a lot). I took it to the dealer and was told their transmission guy test drove it and reported "hanging up in gear, slipping and making noise". He found a TAC (#71-1503293626) that described the problem. They took the trans out and found the torque converter was coming apart sending trash through out the transmission. The pump was scored and full of metal, 1-2-3-4 piston hung up. Replaced 1-2-3-4, replaced TCM, replaced the valve body, cleaned and reconditioned pump, replaced torque converter.

Interestingly, I had had this dealer change the transmission fluid 4,000 miles before this failure. Seems like odd timing to me. Fortunately this repair was all covered under the 100K power train warranty.

Has anyone else had their torque converter come apart?

It happens.. It had nothing to do with doing the Transmission fluid change, especially 4,000 miles later. If it happened right after you might relate it, but typically you do change all the transmission fluid and then you have a problem it is because the problem was already there and there was probably metal already in the system and the machine that flushes it out flushed it into a solenoid or valve...

We have done tons of builds on those platforms and have had great success with the o.e. transmissions.
On our higher HP builds we do upgrade the transmissions with some aftermarket goodies to make them more durable.
Like "kc0cmj" mentioned the fluid change "curse" happens almost imitatively post fluid change not 4k later.

The OEM torque converter is known to be weak and have issues. Several TSB's on this. Also, when getting an after market, ONLY get a triple disc version to avoid issues in the future.

If you need a inexpensive like new take out, have a shop full of them.

While on this subject, my car is new to me so I am learning. I can't locate the transmission dip sick. Is there not one and do they recommend fluid change at any given time?
There isn't one. There is only a "fill hole" with a "plug" and a fill check procedure to go by.... I would recommend a professional do it but if you want to do it yourself there are a ton of videos etc on the 'net....
