GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz is fully behind development of Chevrolet's aggressive Volt plug-in hybrid, but not for the same reasons as many environmentalists. Mr. Lutz — GM's go-to man for one-liners and candid opinion — had some choice words against the claim of global warming.

"Global warming is a total crock of ****.” Lutz told a group of mostly local journalists during a closed-door meeting at the Cacharel restaurant near Dallas and Fort Worth. "I'm a skeptic, not a denier … I’m motivated more by the desire to replace imported oil than by the CO2."

Aside from CEO Rick Wagoner, Lutz is among the highest-ranking GM executives who speaks with the press on a regular basis.

According to D Magazine, Lutz made it clear his opinion doesn't guide GM. "My opinion doesn’t matter," he said. Of course, GM has done nothing to tone down the outspoken executive during his tenure as head of product development.

Indeed, Lutz is no stranger to controversial points of view. He is openly opposed to the U.S. government's new CAFE fuel efficiency standards, which he has claimed will add $6,000 to $10,000 to the price tag of most cars.

He even went as far as blasting his own company in 2006 for failing to compete with Japanese automakers early on. "I can't believe that we were so stupid," he said in March of that year.

Lutz is the man! :D
Like him or not, he sure ain't afraid to tell it like it is.

I think if I met him in person he would sound like the Mickey from the Rocky movies or the old grumbling coach that uses GD in every sentence. I think I like this guy. I wish his opinion influenced the company more.

Research I've done agrees with him....

I've been doing research for a college paper that shows many scientists saying global warming is a natural cycle & this latest phase will be ending between 2010-2020. Here are some links with the "Main statement" of each article if anyone is interested...::)

http://globalweatheroscillations.com/GlobalWarming.html

The update to this page will show new information on global warming, PFM data, analysis and correlations to past global warming and cooling cycles going back 450,000 years. Will include very specific discussions showing that earth is currently at the peak of 5 climate warming cycles, and therefore the warmest period in nearly 450,000 years.

Global warming is a natural geological process that could begin to reverse itself within 10 to 20 years, predicts an Ohio State University researcher. It is the rising global temperatures that are naturally increasing the levels of carbon dioxide, not the other way around, he says.

“If this were a CO2 driven warming it should have started in 1940 and risen strongly from there. In fact warming started in 1850 and rose sharply until 1940 then decreased for 35 years.” Mr Avery, a former US agriculture official whose celebrated earlier book was Saving the Planet with Pesticides and Plastic: The Environmental Triumph of High Yield Farming, suggests that the natural cycle of warming and cooling may come from variations in cosmic rays which have been linked to cloud formation.

The Earth has gone through warming periods before without human influence, they note. And not all of the evidence supports global warming. Air temperatures in the lower atmosphere have not increased appreciably, according to satellite data, and the sea ice around Antarctica has actually been growing for the last 20 years

I agree with Lutz and others, i think that the earth is going through a cycle and that it will subside in a few years. the whole thing with CAFE and other laws is just another way for the oils hungry stock holders to get mroe money from the little guy further holding him down.

while im no expert and ive watched the discovery channel special on global warming and have done a little research myself, you can't deny that all the emmissions from our vehicles are causing some of this. That is not to say that i think they are the sole culprit, i think that they are just adding to a naturally occuring cycle.

Yes, tax rebates for buying gas guzzlers to help reduce global cooling.
Can I apply for these tax rebates now, to avoid delays? My 6.0 liter 4x4 Silverado 2500HD is a bit thirsty!

He (as a big man in a bigger company) has a large stake in it being a crock of ****. If its true or not GM needs it to be a natural cycle as do all other car companies. Cars are the most recognizable pollluter out there. Most every one has one and everyone can relate. We should take this as it is propaganda to further the corprate position to increase dividends to the stock holders. He might be a car guy and thats good for us but he is also a corporate officer and that will always trump the truth.

I love to hear him speaking the truth. But you know they are gonna catch **** for this, and the environmentalists are not going to be happy.

It's pretty conceded to think that we have as much influence on the planet as people think we do. Like saying the Earth is the center of the universe. It's just unfortunate that they decided to pick on the auto industry, and leave the factories and 18 wheelers to continue to pollute at their leisure.

Yes, of course, absolutely, unless you take into account that GM is developing less polluting technologies the same as it would if global warming were real. So where's the money saved if Bob believes that global warming is a crock of ****?

If you don't believe that global warming is a political, rather than a environmental problem, and a weapon mainly aimed at wealthy western nations, then why aren't China and India bound by Kyoto? They're having a hard go of cleaning up the air in Beijing enough for the Olympics.

As for stock dividends, is GM still paying them after these years of losses? It would be kind of stupid, wouldn't it?

Although I'm no scientist of any kind, I do agree that man-made global warming is an economy driven hoax.
