so as most of you know i am in the oil industry... it sucks when there is an oil spill and the company responsible doesn't know how to fix it; it hurts the entire industry. my company has not had a drop of oil spilt in several years. in their defense everyone expects them to fix something like this overnight, and that isn't how things work out in the Gulf, especially on a new well that was not completely developed. drilling is the most dangerous part of the life of a well. keep in mind they are working in mile deep water with mangled tubing. you can't just send a team in scuba gear down to fix it.

i'm not going to make this a thread on what they should or should not have done, cuz i have too much of a sense of humor for that.

but in a nutshell, this is what ACTUALLY happened:

I dont know what to say about this !

Actually whoever came up with this is sick but a tad bit funny.

Creative you may say however maybe they can think of a way to clean up the mess.

I sure wish they would quit showing the pelican covered in Oil and the bird just frozen there in the middle of the mush. Yeah Yeah it tears me up seeing that **** go ahead call me soft hearted.

Enough pointing fingers lets just fix the ****.

Amazing we can stick someone on the moon , we can clone sheep , we can do **** in the aerospace industry that if yall knew you would Freak but we cant fix a dam oil leak. WTF

I cant even watch the NEWS because of this.

The well broke. They'll fix it. End of story. Beating BP up is just not going to solve anything.

...it DOES make them a GREAT investment while their stock is down. 10K buy in BP stock, coming up!

Yep, that brings the collective IQ of the beltway to..

.00000000000000 (Many zeros later..) 00003.

Could be worse.. I hear Cali is still trying to figure out how many zeros are in 100 for their budget..

The gov't cant run a ***** house worth a crap. What makes anyone think that they are capable of capping a leaking well? The last thing we need is the gov't calling the shots here. Let people who have the tech and the money to fix the problem fix it.

I'm tired of hearing the gov't say that BP isn't doing enough fast enough only to watch them turn around and talk about how the gov't red tape is bogging down the whole operation.

i'm so sick of all this bad crap that keeps happening down here.

i just wish they would get it fixed already cuz people are losing their jobs, the seafood industry is almost dead (and god help anyone who comes near me when i can't have oysters, shrimp, or any of the other good seafood i'm used to eatin), and our bayous, swamps, and marshes are all at serious risk (some already affected).

you guys don't even wanna know how i really feel, so i'll keep it nice and just say this stinks!!

the guy who created this website is a specialist in capping oil leaks.

http://www.oilspillfix.com/

here is the article i found this in:
http://www.asylum.com/2010/06/04/texas-entrepreneur-i-can-fix-the-****-oil-leak/

this isn't how i would have done it, my way would have cost more time and money, but like the old sayin' goes "there's more than one way to skin a cat!"
Maybe what we need is an idea thread so everyone can vent. Sure beats yelling at the TV.

I would have cut the broken drill pipe off the well after I found out the BOP wasn't working, then I would have put a cap on it and put some form work around and poured concrete around the BOP and cap until only the relief valve for the cap was visible. Then cap off the well and weld it shut and just for good measure, pour more concrete over it.

31 days after the well started leaking, its no longer a problem.

As for cleaning up the oil plume, I suggest sharks with friggin lasers:D

I may get bashed here, but I really think the Russians idea of dropping a small tactical nuke in the pipe was a way better idea than letting 5,000 barrels of oil a day leak out. . . granted there would be long term effects from the nuke, but how long will the oil issue be around? How many more thousands of gallons of oil are going to be leaked out before anything is done?

It's sad the Russians have done the nuke thing 3 times already, but at least they didn't have a oil leak for two months. . .

No, the leak isnt fixed yet. They cut the pipe off the well head about two weeks ago and put a small cap on it with vent valves. They are catching something like 15000 barrels a day and the rest of the 60000 barrels/day of oil leaks into the gulf.

The nuke is bad for several reasons:

1.) By the time they suggested the idea, we were almost a month into the spill. Nobody wants radioactive tar balls washing up on shore.

2.) The depth at which the 15kt nuke would be detonated is deep enough to probably cause a tsunami comparable to what we saw in 2005 Christmas tsunami.

3.) The undersea geology is so unstable that the nuke would make the leak worse, not stop it. It would glassify and fracture the oceanic bedrock to the point that we would have multiple leak points and make it virtually impossible to drill a relief well to cap off the already leaking bore.

4.) The well itself sits down in a crater on the seafloor. So even if the nuclear detonation itself is not big enough to trigger a tsunami, the underwater landslide it causes would be.

Worst thing about this whole mess is the SAME EXACT THING happened 31 years ago (1979).

And guess what...
They tried the SAME EXACT procedures to stop it, and yep! they failed.

But in 1979, the leak was only 150 feet underwater.
This time it's 5,000 feet underwater.

What finally worked in 1979 is building 2 relief wells.
They were built fairly quickly since they only had to go down 150 feet.
I really hope they've started relief well construction... with 5,000 feet to build, it's gonna take a while.

Kevin Costner developed an awesome new technology for clean up.
They finally started listening to that and have ordered 32 of his machines.
That should be very effective for cleanup, but they still have to stop the leak first!

Oh and BTW - boycotting BP gasoline isn't gonna solve anything.
All you're doing is hurting the independent station owners, and this isn't their fault.
