General Motors has been forced to rework the investment case for the Chevrolet Camaro in the wake of new fuel-economy rules adopted this past December.

The Camaro will still be built, but higher-end V-8 versions likely will be priced higher than expected. As for other planned GM rear-drivers–a new Chevrolet Impala, Buick LaCrosse and the replacement for the Pontiac G8 due this spring–all have been dropped along with a new V-8 engine GM was contemplating building.

“You can’t kill something that was never approved,” said one GM official, who asked for anonymity but who confirmed the rear-wheel-drive projects are now dead.

Stew Low, a spokesman for GM of Canada, said the Camaro project is safe and is moving forward. The GM of Canada plant in Oshawa, Ontario outside of Toronto should be ready to build the first Camaro late this year, Low said.

This doesnt sound like good news. If this is so, I guess Ill be looking at a different car. Im not paying near 40k just to get a base level v8.

I guess, dare I say it, a mustang or challenger.
All this news makes GM sound like a push-around.

I hope S.S. comes in to settle this and reassure us that we can get a base V8 for near Mustang GT price.

That article seems to contain factual errors already. I've been looking at spyshots of the next LaCrosse at GMI for quite some time, and those never were of a RWD car.

If what is being said has any truth to it, remember that the Mustang GT will be subject to the same regulations, and will likely be more expensive, as Ford has a two mode hybrid system only in the Escape, and thus has less of a starting point to work from.

Here are my fall back choices:

LS2 C6 - light, quick, out of the box
older GT500- bolt-on happy
LS2 GTO- cheaper than a C6 and with the extra money for modding
G8- bolt-on happy and be a practical car
Challenger- newer, different, and a challenge.

I want to have fun in my next car, not more BS. If GM is going to give us a V8 Camaro, it better be affordable and not in the vette range which this article leads me to believe.

There will not be a 40K base camaro guys, read the article...

"The Camaro will still be built, but higher-end V-8 versions likely will be priced higher than expected"

I would not be surpised if this becomes reality, but it is just one article. Don't put too much into it at this point

To me this sounds like a lot of speculation.

Also I don't believe GM is going to leave Camaro as the only Zeta vehicle in NA.
You have:
Camaro
G8
G8 ST
and maybe GMC ute

Thats 4 cars in NA.

then out of NA you have:
Holden VE Commodore
Holden VE Commodore Sportwagon
VE Ute
Lumina
Caprice
park avenue
Dawoo L4X
Vauxhall VXR8
Holden WM Statesman/Caprice

That is 13 vehicles right there on one platform.

Wel if this report has any truth to it, i would say they are trying to kill the american muscle car. The law would affect all players, the camaro, mustang, challanger, viper vette, and other mucsle car out there. The part that bothers me is that GM is already telling us they are going to have to price the camaro higher because it will be the only car on the zeta platform (i also find this hard to belive after all teh research and design that went in ot it). Have the boys there in corp. not learned anything from the last few years of camaro sales, THEY CAN NOT PRICE IT HIGHER THEN THE MUSTANG, this can not be stressed enough ot them. I mean for gods sake every man woman and child is driving a mustang right now. so there fan base has grown rather big now. The only saving grace is that many mustang lovers are not liking the newer mustang concept and change due to come out around the same time as the camaro.

Buy the biggest old truck you can get and put on the back window "I could be driving a 2010 Camaro instead, ya happy Mr treehugger":D

Get an old truck with a manual choke. Dust every Prius you find by pulling the choke. I guess an oil injector in the exhaust would work nice as well.

When the tree huggers complain you can tell them you can now longer afford your dream car because of stupid cafe standards instead of letting the market determine what cars to build.

I can't see hybrid tech adding 10K to the price of a car. They don't need to push much to get it to the level hell an "old" LS1 camaro can get 30 mpg already.

Bingo. The LS motors get GREAT gas mileage compaired to their performance. I don't see what the big deal is, unless of course GM keeps pushing large trucks and SUVs because thats "what consumers want," and they need to offset the gas mileage for CAFE.
