i got bored after work, went out to my garage and checked the torque on all my exhaust clamps so no leaks occur. i just got a new torque wrench so i was playing with it.

in the process i snapped the bolt on one of my exhaust band clamps :facepalm:

i was about to go to ACE hardware to find another bolt, but luckily i had an extra clamp laying around in my garage! good thing i'm a pack rat and don't throw anything away.

must be my huge strong muscles... i did do this after working out :rolleyes:

Band clamp? Those fancy looking things? I still rock the factory clamps. I'm such a cheap wad.

the "accuseal" band clamps came with my axle-back exhaust, and ARH header kit. when i combined the 2 i had one extra clamp leftover:confused:

they are prone to leaking, and a PITA to keep perfectly sealed at each pipe connection. they have the 2 pipes have to be connected far enough in, and the clamp has to be properly aligned so no leak occured.

then BAM! i torqued them all to factory specs and i sheared one of the bolts!

Are they stepped band clamps? I had great success using stainless stepped band clamps when I got my CME tips chromed on the 4th gen. Fits the pipes better with no leaks. Got them from a place that sold school bus parts of all things. MUCH cheaper than using the "brand name" clamps and accomplised the same thing.

Another "tip" as it were, if the ends of the outer pipe aren't split-tailed, you can cut a short slot on each side (without going past the inner pipe depth and band clamp coverage area causing a hole) to help allow the pipe to be clamped down further.

Just an idea.

This was what I was talking about. For the life of me I can't remember where I got them. That was 7 years ago, and I'm sure they've increased band clamp usage all over the place by now so you can get them pretty much anywhere.

yeah i'm sure those aren't hard to find, and would help in preventing leaks. i don't have anymore leaks now since i torqued and adjusted them all :)shakefist: at Midas for a crumy install job)

i only took it there for them to make the cut in the stock exhaust cuz i don't have a saw. i knew i would be taking it home to re-adjust myself. i only paid the guy $20 cash for the work :lol:

i adjusted last back in october when i installed the headers which required no cutting and was a fairly simple install. i just took the stock exhaust off and stuck it in the bed of my truck to midas again to make another 2 cuts for the stock pipe to connect the 2 systems. that cost me $5 :lol:

when i was underneath doing my diff fluid change and suspension install, i noticed some black carbon buildup around a few of the clamps; especially where the slit in the outer pipe was. so i re-adjusted them again and made sure the bolts were all very tight and torqued to 135 ft-lbs like suggested.

thats when one snapped! but all is good and no more leaks from what i can tell :)shakefist: at clamp on exhausts)
