I put royal purple in my axles of my pickup truck before, ran it for 5k miles and noticed some howling from the gears. That stuff was no good, burned up my front axle.

Never royal purple again.

But i did just change the diff on my Camaro, took it to the stealership...but id rather have the GM stuff in it. or mobile 1.

i have royal purple in my diff on my silverado 2500 with 262k miles. no problems at all. you probably used the wrong weight fluid. there are 2 different kinds. ill be putting royal purple in the hummer when its due.

This is off the Mobil 1 site, so do I or don't I add the limited slip additive?

Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90 contains special friction modifiers designed for limited slip-type differentials. In most applications, the addition of special LS (limited slip) additives is not required. For axles requiring the highest level of limited-slip performance, OEM specific LS additives can be added to this fluid.
i used this gear lube when i changed mine... and you DO NOT need to add any additive. driven about 3,000 miles with the new lube and it never whined or broke

plus it is cheaper than the OEM and royal purple, i paid $25 for 2 quarts and only used a little over 1 quart.

Thanks RJ, the guy at a local parts store tried to sell me the additive saying it HAD to be added. I didn't think so but wantd to make sure.
NP, i was sceptical at first as well, but the reason GM sells that stuff is because the OEM lube doesn't have it inside, so they can use the same bottle of lube on multiple cars that contain or do not contain limited slips.

most off the shelf lubes do like Mobil1, Royal Purple, and Redline; so no need for the GM additive with those.

I agree.. I have used it for years and have nothing but great stuff and have personally seen improvement on gas milage and great wear protection.

come to think of it, my gas mileage has gone up since ive had the fluid in. im sure its not all due to the fluid, but i had over 1 mpg increase. and when your only getting 10mpg's, 1 is a huge step!

We did the Differential fluid today. It had 3300 miles on it and looked kinda gray, not much metal on the magnet. The mechanic at the dealer tryed to talk me out of changing it, but he changed his tune after seing the old fluid. He said he did not know what would cause that color and said it sure did not hurt changing it.

Thanks for the tip.:5go:
The color is caused by a dye that is placed in there at the factory. I read the service bulletin that stated that the dye color will dissipate around the 5000 to 6000 mile mark and is normal. It looks milky gray until it finally dissipates.

So many Ques. so little time !!! 1st, to Jekyll-N-Hyde,What was the G.M. additive Part#,& what type & grade oil did you use for the rear Diff. ?I have a 2019 1LT,V-6 , ^ speed manual. Next,To "Wraith SS" ,What Royal Purple Lubriacant are you talking about ? Is it akso for the Rear Diff [ I know'Please save the smarty pants answers about not having a Front diff, tisk, tisk !!!]. I am new to this generation of Camaro's & honestly don't know if I have a limited slip Diff. I assume I do [ by virtue of having an controlloable "Traction control". Finally, to "redJewell2SS,is the Diff. fluid differant between a V-8 SS & my 1LT V-6 ,6 speed Std. ? Thanks to any & all who wish to respond to my Ques. I have owned loot's of good old U.S. street iron over the past 3 decades, but this is the one that really brings me back to my youth.I really want to treat it well,& most of all, want to start adding goodies to it [ something that Detroit hasn't sparked my interest in decades ].Admitadely,I need help from some fresh new minds. if your a very conservative driver and your looking for the bext mpg out of your ss, then id say, sure, change your oil every 15k. but for anyone who drives their car, no way in hell should you wait for anywhere close to 10k. thats stupid.
why not?..the people who built the car engineered it to withstand longer oil changes!..if YOU don't trust that they are telling you the truth, then waste your money and change it at 3,000 miles or whatever!..remember !..as long as you can prove you changed the oil at the right intervals according to the oil monitor, then there is NO issue with g.m not honoring a warranty claim if you keep your receipts!..don't call people 'stupid"..if they want to be "smart" and NOT throw money away because YOU say they should change the oil sooner!..if i need another "father" i will be sure to let YOU know!..(lol!)

I take it you didn't read the articles I provided a link to? There is NO electronic sensor. From the article, I have highlighted the important phrases:

So its a computer program that is run by the on board computer... so if a person trusts the car's computer's for other functions, why not this one?
i agree!..this is "new" technology, and as stated,IF you have an engine issue, you WILL be covered under warranty IF you follow the computer!..so (w.t.f) is the problem?..changin' it at 3,000 miles is wasting money!..period!..

in addendum!..as a matter of fact!..the 'computer"
in these cars is in reality,TELLING you that you can drive a lot longer,on average than 3,000 miles by indicating WHEN the oil needs to be actually changed!.(hot ****!)..what more information do you require?..(lol!)

+1

This sums it up right there. When people try to preach from the pulpit on telling others what they should do their own property...I simply cannot comprehend this. Espousing an opinion is one thing, but trying to convince someone the car is smarter than they are is out in left field. It's my money and if I want to "waste" it, I can. Tell me the things you buy and I'll bet I can come up with my own list of "wasted" purchases that you would disagree with. No personal offense to anyone, but everyone but me can butt the hell out of my own car's maintenance schedule.

Do with you and yours, and leave me and mine alone. While the oil monitor is a nice feature and could save the clueless, I'm not waiting for the car to tell me what to do and when, and surely not from anyone else in the peanut gallery. I'll decide.

I dont understand why this thread even went into a topic when to change oil.

Change your rearend fluid and be done with it for a long time.

As for your oil change do it when you want does it really matter what other people do ? NO everyone is just giving there own opinion.

a recent thread like this in the past made me wonder hmmmmmm I wonder myself whats the difference between 3K mile oil and 5 thousand.

I dont drive my 69 every day or even every weekend I change the oil in it every January why when I dont put 3K a year on it ? I'm anal and I feel it needs to be changed.

On my 2010 I have to run 15w50 mobil one why ? 11.2.1 compression and a Cam and guess what my oil almost runs $10 a Quart.
I Changed my oil the first time ever 5W30 with 2K miles and guess what it was clean as hell ( I doubt any of you broke your car in like I did ) I even sent it off to a labratory to have it tested and guess what ? It passed with 72% remaining
Shortly afterwards goodbye to the L99 hello LS3 New Cam , pistons , everything thats when I went to 15W50 I was told to go to 1K change then go to 5K. Recently I just reached that mark and changed my Oil and guess what I again sent it off and had it tested and guess what ?
58%

how do they know ? who knows yeah they say I can go longer but guess what I was told by who built my engine who also worked with and knows lingenfelter personally and they told me every 5K

Change your oil when you want its up to you yeah I would go 5K "IMO"
3K is to early hell 5 may even be to early but I work my engine.
I could probably go 7K however 5K makes me sleep better.

Whatever works for you do it and get lots of sleep at night I do then I get up and make the Oil work on 52 degree mornings like this morning :D
