http://www.autoblog.com/2007/08/31/chrysler-confirms-challenger-srt-8/

from Autoblog....
We feel a "Thank you, Captain Obvious" is in order for this piece of news that was published all the way back on July 12th within the walled garden of Ward's Auto. The news is simply that Chrysler has confirmed it will build an SRT-8 version of the upcoming Challenger pony car. Chrysler, sorry, the NEW Chrysler, has never issued a release to our knowledge confirming it will sell the Challenger SRT-8, but again, we don't need one because they'd be crazy not to.

All current SRT-8 products use Chrysler's 6.1L HEMI V8, so we would expect the same powerplant for the Challenger SRT-8 producing 425 horsepower and 420 ft-lbs. of torque. However, considering how many high-powered variants of the Mustang are offered, and that Chevy will certainly offer a comparably high-powered version of the Camaro, we expect the SRT-8 to break rank with its siblings and have considerably more power than we're used to seeing in an SRT-8 product. In fact, we may reasonably expect all SRT-8 models to get an commensurate bump in power after the Challenger SRT-8 debuts in late 2009, especially with some like the Dodge Charger, Magnum and Chrysler 300 switching from the current LX platform to a new one code named LY.

BTW - Less than 159 days remain until the production Chrysler Challenger debuts at the Chicago Auto Show next February (check the countdown clock).

Hmm me thinks GM is waiting until after the 2009 model year to offer up the big momma version Camaro to see what this will do??? Oh and I wonder what this "LY" platform will bring

Yep did anyone doubt this? Funny how many parts on Mopars are overengineered (ever seen the spindles on a Daytona that thing would fit in a big as truck and be at home) for nothing. And they are always not the parts that usually fail. So ya if its more "rigid" then it definately will weigh more I'm sure.

Hold on Hold on
No one can say how much the Challenger weighs.
Its like the Camaro, the weight of the Chally concept is just as unknown as the Camaro. Just because the the family car is heavy and sits on a simular frame does not mean that the Chally will be. How much does the G8 weigh? Is it around 3800lbs or more? If it is well thats what the Camaro will weigh. Get it!
I dont know about u guys but I knew Chrysler was going to do it.
Now what is Chevy going to do. They havent been the type for a while to stand around and get punched on. I think we are about to see that fastest Camaro in history.

G8 is 4 door so it will add a little more weight than the others.
True. Then wouldnt the same formula apply with the Challenger?
If u cant assume that the Camaro is going to be heavy because it sits on the same frame that is used by the G8.
Then u cant assume that the Challenger will be heavy because its on a simular frame as the Charger.
G8 has 2 extra doors.
So does the Charger.
We are just going to have to see. I wouldnt be so quick to just think that the Camaro is going to be lighter than the Challenger.

Well...the Challenger is from Chrysler....everything from Chrysler weighs a metric tonne. So it's a pretty good assumption that the Challenger will weigh more than a house.

Mild joke there.

Yes they do have a bunch of heavy cars.
Except the Viper.
Dam Sounds funny when u say it.
But its my opinion that they know the competition being that they have had no choice but to sit around and watch for years now. They should know what it is going to take to out run the comp.
They have been fightin Chevy for years now in the Vette vs Viper thing.
I can say that the Viper only gets better it doesnt get worse.
No, im not comparing the Viper to the Challenger but im tryin to display how they go about building the cars for the comp.

I just did a fast search and looked up the charger srt-8 weight, it's "only" 4200 Tons!!! LOL. So my question is, if the g8 is 3800 lb???, and the camaro is going to be lighter than 3700 at least, how much really should the chally weight? I would say more than 4000 tons again, or maybe more???

I wouldnt say that is the formula that they are useing.
I dont even know what the G8 weighs.
All Im tryin to say is dont think that the Challengers weight is going to be a down fall for the car.
I would say the lack of after market will be.
Look at all the other categorys.
SRT4 is faster than the Cobalt SS
SRT 10 is faster than the sorry SS Siverado
SRT 8 Charger faster than the Impala SS and GXP Grand Prix
The only one which I must admit is a big deal is the ZO6 which can destroy the Viper.
Oh another one, SRT8 Grand Cherokee faster than SS Trailblazer.
Chrysler knows how to compete.
But the lack of aftermarket will be the downfall for even a 500hp Challenger.
Actully I think the SRT4 and the Cobalt SS are real close along side the Charger SRT and the GXP in the 1/4 mile.
Everything else was a hands down victory.

But, as of 2008 dodge pumped the viper to 600 horses, so... Viper vs Vette again....

Most of those vehicles cost about 20% more than their competitors. The Cherokee cost $10,000 more than the TSS.

Yes they are direct competitors, but let's compare equally equipped vehicles here.

Cobalt and SRT4 is a drivers race.

Silverado SS was not meant to compete with the SRT10, it doesn't even have the Z06 engine in it. Again let's compare equal vehicles. I guarantee that if you dropped a Z06 engine in a short and wide Silverado, which I believe they do not offer (only extended cabs), the Dodge boys would be crying and so would John Hennessey.

I will wait to speak on the Chargeless/300 VS. G8, and this one does not really matter to me, but you nver know....

Viper Vs. Vette what year is it? it all depends on who's up to bat in this game. One year it's the Viper and the next it is usually just a Base Vette!!!!! he he...... Again, driver's race.
