The problem with politicians is that they usually propose or say exactly what the people in their immediate audience want to hear. I say let the auto industry work on CAFE standards at their own rate. If they are mandated to 50 MPG, can you imagine the amount of $$$$ that will cost them in engineering and design, research and development??? I guess we should all ride horses or bicycles...just don't ask any politician to give up his fleet of limos or private aircraft!!!I read about it on the cellphone at work last night. Richardson said he would jump CAFE up to 50 miles per gallon. He actually said he would increase MPG efficiency to 50 mpg..I guess he's a brilliant scientist and is hogging all the high-tech crap needed to do so in his garage. Either that or he's a lying bastard.

Already heard that the Senate approved the 35mpg hike, which is lame. I say the automotive industry is doing fine by itself. The competition between them all is already creating massive breakthroughs in MPG. But atleast they have 12 years to get them all that high. And when the Volt comes out that'll probably jump GM's up bigtime.
