What I don’t understand is why doesn’t GM just tell us how to disable On-$tar? There are a segment of owners that will never subscribe to the service. And they don’t want their data be sent to, used by or sold by On-Star. I’m in the market for a new daily driver. I was thinking about a 2014 Impala LTZ. With On-Star being forced on me, I may just need to buy a Ford. Just saying…

PS – Excellent write-up. I did disconnect the On-Star antenna.

I know this is an old thread, but I can confirm OnStar can connect with the coax disconnected and antennas (on the box) and fuse removed.

I was rear ended the other night but my car was drivable; the other persons car was not. She called a tow truck and when one showed up, to my surprise, IT WAS FOR ME!

The tow truck driver said OnStar received a beacon from MY CAR. I was shocked to say the least as I removed the OnStar fuse, disconnected the coax, and removed the small antenna from the box as well.

I guess I'll have to try terminating the antenna connection(s)...

I disconnected the credit card that powered OnStar a GE Money Bank Discover Card ... the credit card turned turned out to be totally useless once the account was given to GE Money Bank because they would block it every time I spent over a $100 or went out of town ... I specifically called then and told them I was going to take a cruise and no matter what, if they did not hear from me, DO NOT DISCONNECT MY CARD. Predictably, a couple of charges on the boat for drinks and I was given notices by the cruise line my card was being turned down ... so gave them another credit card, returned home, chewed several a$$e$ over the phone (which I know does no good but it did make me feel better that someone HAD to listen to me), then cancelled the card. Had been a cardholder for 13-14 years. They sent me some note that they wanted me to be satisfied ... hahahaha GE Money Bank will never ever see another dime of my business and they will never satisfy me now. Haven't heard from OnStar yet, but they will not get another credit card number.

BTW, which fuse is for the onstar unit? I was told to take mine to the dealer for issues with onstar not sending monthly reports but would rather try just pulling the fuse and leaving it out for a little while without driving the car to just "reboot" the thing first.

New info on an old thread

I have a 14 2LT RS.
I disconnected the spystar via a little different method. I actually opened the box and pulled the main circuit board out, under it is a cell phone board and a connector mates the two up. I pulled the connector so nothing is connected to the cell board. and then put it all back together.

The BT, XM and all NAV and every thing worked great for a week.
The button on the mirror stays lit but doesn't connect.
My issue now is with the cars nav system.

In the writeup I found the author stated the compass on the middle display would change to dashes -- which it has and as I stated before the nav worked fine after the mod. When I try to use the nav it doesn't link to the satellites. I get a GPS with a red line through it on the map screen.

To set aside some replies.
I don't need anyone knowing what I am doing or who I am doing it with even if it is legal. It is simply no ones business but mine.
I have a windshield type GPS that I can stick to the camaro and motor on but it seems like a huge waste seeing the nav system in the car is decent and expensive.
Lastly I could pull the whole thing but that is drastic for a system that was pretty decent and again more money thrown away.

A thought that I have is the system may store data (speed, miles, etc.) and that buffer is now full as it can't send anything.

Are any of your creative modders experiencing this or have any ideas?

You would be better served starting a new thread.
I suggest reconnecting the board.

No, the antenna was not connected and wasn't even very close to the coax connector on the box. There is no doubt that my 2012 SS convertible was able to connect to Onstar with the antenna disconnected. At that point I figured I might as well hook it up and have the compass, so I did. GM certainly went to a lot of trouble to make sure that we couldn't remove their monitor from our cars!
I just wanted to turn of tracking. I unplugged the antenna with the chip coaxial looking thing. It was the easiest and I decided to see what that did before I started unplugging anything else. Red light on mirror. So I hit onstar. It still was able to call so I spoke with the lady. She said she couldn't locate me. That was all I wanted. Will it be able to track through cell phone data? Should I do more or is this enough to stop tracking?

Cell towers can be used to locate you to the nearest tower.

6. The small colored connectors are antennas. Unplug them by gently prying the side of the inset clip out with a small flat screwdriver and pull the connector off. Without antennas, the box can't send/receive data. DON'T unplug J1 through J4! You'll throw "Lost Communication with fuel pump control module codes." There were no J3 or J4 connectors on my car, if yours has them, leave them alone.
I know this is an old thread. But i had issue about this. I took of completely the onstar module, now i had cell light which is U0109 Lost Communication with fuel pump control module code. I dont wanna put it back because i had battery leak due to this onstar module. I think it never going into sleep mode or something. How can i delete this cell light? It is a permanent code, and didnt delete with obd scan tool.
