It was almost a decade ago that Prabhakar Patil, an engineering director at Ford Motor Co., sat in the back of an early Toyota Prius next to then-Ford CEO Alex Trotman and received his biggest assignment: Develop a hybrid for Ford. The result was the Ford Escape Hybrid, introduced in 2004.
