General Motors is considering building a micro-premium car, a new report finds. The model — which is being considered in the wake of new CAFE regulations and $100 a barrel oil — would compete against the MINI Cooper, BMW 1-series and Audi A3.

However, GM is still deciding which architecture to use in the new car. The Detroit automaker recently announced that it will build a production a version of the Beat concept in the coming years, but its fuel-efficient front-drive setup wouldn't translate well into a driver-focused premium package. The Kappa platform remains a possibility — the same that underpins the Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice — as does a new small rear-wheel drive platform still under development.

What also remains unclear is what brand GM would sell the vehicle under. The Cadillac brand isn't a candidate for the new model as GM wants to keep the luxury marque for bigger, high-powered cars, and the Chevrolet brand is likely out because it couldn't command the price of a luxury model.

With Pontiac vehicles focusing on strictly performance vehicles, that leave Buick, Saab and Saturn. While a decision is still a ways out — GM hasn't even built a clay model of the vehicle yet — it would seem that Buick would be a perfect fit for the new model. Its not-quite-Cadillac premium image and new focus on style — see the Enclave CUV — would lend itself seamlessly to a premium small car.

Whatever the car ends up being, it shows a new way of thinking at GM and a general shift in what a premium car can be. As one GM executive said, "It's a given that everyone will have to de-couple luxury from size if we are to make that 35 mpg."

It's the Dollar, actually. Since the Dollar is worth less (not quite worthless yet), then oil costs more "Dollars" per barrel.

I would like to see a three wheel (two front, 1 back) commuter only car with a cabin that seats just two people fighter jet style. Something small, aerodynamic, sporty, and ultra cheap. Something like that...Was it a VW concept? The three wheel (2 f 1 r) that leaned into corners? It could be a blast to drive and get 60 mpg.

If my option was to be seen driving one of those 3 cars or walk, well, I guess I'm buying some comfortable shoes!

When these concepts came out, they pissed me off. I know...Me get pissed right? It was just further evidence to me that GM wasn't leading any charges. The HHR had taken off (PT Cruiser rip). These were just Chevy's versions of the Smart Car and Scion XB.

Pff, the HHR isn't a PT cruiser rip, it's a mini oldass suburban. It actually looks good, while the PT cruiser looks all bloated. Like most chrysler vehicles.

The Beat is hideous, the Trax looks like a mini Jeep Liberty.

LOL I think the same guy even designed both. I like the HHR better, but it wasn't an ORIGINAL idea. Hell it was even based on the Cobalt platform, just like the Cruiser is on the Neon platform...Which is another thing...Could the Cobalt have looked more like a Neon?

WHOOPS!

Huh, weird. Is that the official poll from Chevy?
I thought the press release about producing the Beat said that it had won the poll.

Yeah, looking at the press release again:
http://media.gm.com/servlet/Gateway...monthlyreleasedetail.do?domain=13&docid=41302

It says 1.8 million responses to a global poll and the Beat won.
Perhaps the above poll is just the US poll?

I dunno, now I'm confused lol.
Whoops! I posted a picture of the the poll back when it was in progress (774,613 votes in the pic). The poll ended up with 1.8 million votes :rotflmao:
