I would be curious to know how many members are buying a new model year vehicle for the first time on the forum. Having been there with the SSR I certainly learned a lot in the process and there are advantages and disadvantages to being first on the block to have the latest and greatest.
Advantages:
1. Bragging rights
2. You have what few will have initially
3. A tremendous feeling of pride and ownership
Disadvantages:
1. Mechanical probs. and bugs will appear often in the first model year.
2. Parts will be in short supply initially, especially if you have an accident.
3. The following year or years they will add more features (for example, one year later after introducing the SSR, they gave it a full chrome package and the LS2 engine with 400hp. The 03 year only had 300HP. The year after that they offered the SSR in two tone in addition to the LS2 engine and chrome package).
4. You will most certainly be paying over MSRP as the dealers love to jack up the price on in demand vehicles. They will have a ball with this one.
5. Lack of experience on the part of service technicians working on this specific vehicle will lead to problems created when trying to solve ones already existing.
6. A general feeling of angst while waiting for your vehicle to be delivered and a cumbersome tracking system that moves at the speed of a turtle in reverse.
7. Uncooperative dealerships that will refuse to deal when placing an order.
8. The ordering process will change once the vehicle arrives and extra fees will be added if you want the one you ordered and these can add up to huge dollars. Their attitude will be if you don't want it at that price, someone else will. I had that happen here and I had to go to the Washington D.C. area to get one at MSRP. All the dealers here wanted 10K over sticker!!!!!! They even created a special name for the "specialty collector vehicle fee".
9. You can't hide! Eveyone will be looking at you and asking about your ride! Is that really a disadvantage? Depends....
