I laid it out in another thread:

Restructure to have only three brands: Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac
Take the best of the best in each market segment and make them Chevrolets.
All trucks would be GMC.
Sell Buick to a chinese company (the name, not the current models).
Sell Hummer to the highest bidder.

Ford, same deal. Drop Mercury (or sell it).
Sell Mazda and Volvo
Try to make Lincoln's as attractive as Cadillacs

Chrysler...Burn it to the ground...I don't think they have anything worth saving. Don't get me wrong, I like their cars, they're just not for today's market.

dosen't GM own isuzu, saturn, pontiac and others also

I seriously think that alot of the population that talks of GM deserving to fail dont realize whats at stake.some just think GM = chevy or gmc

there are sister companys also like gmac. there are so many ways for GM to trim the fat (if needed) before shutting down plants.

Eliminate duplicate models.
Eliminate inventory, customers could order direct from factory online.
Eliminate dealerships, just have display models in smaller scale showrooms for people to see the actual size of the vehicles and the colors.
Put actual prices on cars instead of the "Smoke & Mirrors" game the salesman use to sell cars. Each vehicle should have a set price, period!
Eliminate all the vice-presidents and useless management in the Big Three.

This would be a good start.

GM cannot control the dealerships. The smoke and mirrors game is not GMs, and I'm sure they would prefer stealerships just sell at MSRP.
Ordering direct from the manufacturer is a pretty good idea but this cannot ever work as a sole reliable business model. Prices would go up exponentially because there would be no more quanitity discounts or cost savings from any level of the process.
Also, people want to TEST DRIVE cars. They want to see them in multiple colors with multiple configurations. They want to touch, feel, drive, etc. If what you propose were used as the sole way to purchase a GM car, GM would fail in six months, if for no other reason, that consumers will flock to other manufacturers lots to drive and touch and feel other cars.
Mid to Upper level management cuts is not going to solve the budget problem. It's such a small number compaired to the problem that it's not going to make a difference.

Perhaps I did not think it all the way through. It was just an idea to try something different since what they are doing now obviously isn't working for them either. I'm not really a big business manager, so I don't know all the details. I just think outside the box sometimes. It seems it would help the Big 3 to try something completely different for a change instead of expecting different results from the same efforts.

Just my 2 cents...
