Does GM's RWD strategy include a new GTO?

In recent weeks, we've written about GM's planned rear-wheel-drive offensive — a plan aimed at competing with the growing number of RWD offerings from other American and Asian automakers. The primary target is, of course, the Chrysler 300C and its siblings, the Dodge Magnum, Charger, Challenger, and Chrysler Imperial. Today, columnist Jim Mateja, writing for the Chicago Tribune, speculates that a new Pontiac GTO may be a part of GM's strategy, despite yesterday's announcement that the company would discontinue the current model. Recently, Motor Trend said there would not be another GTO, but Mateja is more optimistic. Other recent rumors have suggested GM's RWD platform will be used for a new Firebird and Trans AM, as suggested by AutoSpies and AutoExtremist. Edmunds has also speculated that a new Impala will target the 300C directly in 2009. In the end, it's not too clear what will happen, but we can't wait to see!

A Trans Am would fit into Pontiac more than anything..even calling it a T/A ...that way it will still have its letter designation but we will know what it is especially with a giant firechicken on the hood ;)
But a new GTO it might happen..
I'd like to see both names back, but realistically it's gonna be one or the other.
But which one?
"Trans Am" is dead dead dead.

There might be a glimmer of hope for "Firebird" but the word on the street is that GM will fold and go under before it uses the Trans Am name again, because it doesn't want to pay the license fee per car to the SCCA Trans Am series for the use of the name.
I dunno, personally I'd rather see Firebird come back, but with no Trans Am model? Hmm... Firebird GXP? Eh, doesn't really sound right.

I think there's more of a business case for GTO to return anyway.
We'll see.
didnt one the GM execs just go on record saying pontiac will get no RWD coupe?

Do you have the article?
the thing about this is that they are talkin about 2009 by that time chrysler will be already to change their body style and the make up of the car. the charger would be out for 4-5 years and the 300C will be what 5-6 years old. GM is so freakin behind times. this is rediculous.

they will come out witht he firebird name. they have to. atleast thats what i think.

Firebird SS
Firebird GT
Firebird GTP
Firebird T/A (just the letters [tee-aaa] - would that be a problem with the SCCA?)
Firebird H.O.
Firebird 427
Firebird LS7 (I like this one)

Any other ideas?
I still think GTO has a better case, as a car that's NOT the same as Camaro.
I would rather have a new GTO than a Firebird as the new Camaro dosen't need a twin.:5go:
