The best way I can describe it is that it is a low frequency hum that can be heard at crushing speeds. When I say "cruising speeds", I mean anytime the car is maintained at a constant speed. Some aftermarket exhaust systems have greater amounts of drone than others and many manufacturers of these systems put a lot of engineering into eliminating drone. The best way to decide is to listen to as many different systems as you can on a car like yours and go for it. Keep in mind that each time you modify any part of the exhaust system, there is a chance you will have some drone.

Here's my take...I think all aftermarket exhaust systems have some drone...but at low levels it is a pleasant sound and people say "My exhaust system has no drone." But at higher levels...the sound becomes obnoxious and that's when people start labeling it "drone".
Thats it in a nut shell

Here's an analogy, If you've ever flown in a 727 or DC-8 (the planes where the engines are in the back, like 2 feet from the fuselage) and sat in the back of the plane, that constant annoying LOUD hummmmm they make when cruizing at altitude. If an exhaust has drone, it'll do the same thing when cruising on the highway. You can't have a conversation at normal speaking voice, or you end up cranking up the stereo to overcome the exhaust drone/noise.

It really is just a derogatory term used to describe the sound any aftermarket exhaust system makes at 2000-3000 rpms. If you like the sound...then no drone...if you don't...THEN it becomes drone.

Here's a good audio example...I have a V6 with JBA Short Headers, Flowmaster Axle-back and electrical cut-outs. With the cut-outs closed Envy purrs like a kitten around 2000 rpms...but once I open the cut-outs she definitely has drone. I only open the cut-outs when I want her to be obnoxious so it's all good to me.

Once you listen to the hum she puts out cruising at 80-90 mph...you'll understand...lol. Some people say she sounds awesome while others say the noise makes them crazy...so it's all pretty relative to what you want to hear.

I have the same exhaust and at cruzing speeds i get a little "drone" but to me its not a bother. I can still talk and even hear my son in the back seat when he ask questions. So like Envy said its all revelent. When I talked to the salesman at Solo he told me that I should leave the Jpipes alone for at least 1000 miles. But they are set to be a quite as possilbe when built. So if you want louder then change the Jpipes. Me I like mine like they are.

Thanks for all the answers,I have to admit I get more answers here than the other forum,by the answers I received I don`t think I have drone,I hardly hear the exhaust at cruising speed,so that`s good, thanks aqgain.

dronning is when the system vibrates, Every muffler has a resonance frequncy, when I had my BBK headers installed, I had the shop put on Flowmasters 40 Series Mufflers, at about 35 MPH, I had such a bad dronning, (viration) I tought my fillings in my teeth would come loose. I turned around and had the shop take the Flowmasters off. He sugested I try Magnaflow and showed me the diff in construction, both were low Res. but if you hit the Flowmasters, you got a loud pinging sound, when he hit the Magnaflows all you got was a thud. thats because the flowmasters had no deadining material inside. and that did the trick, nice sound no dronning
