Santa Maria area California Highway Patrol officers recover a 1969 Camaro, that was reported stolen 36 years ago.

Back in March, Santa Maria resident Keith Williams purchased the camaro through E-Bay from a dealer in Tennessee. But when he got it, he says he found some features on the car that weren't consistent with its model.

Williams contacted the local officer of the CHP, and an officer trained in Vehicle Identification Number verification took at look the vehicle and realized it wasn't right. When officers found the car's true identity, they realized it was reported stolen from Newark, New Jersey back in 1975.

Officers contacted the original owner, and they say she thought it was a prank call! At first, officers say the original owner was convinced the vehicle was "just an old car" and didn't think it was worth it to have the vehicle shipped across the country. But officers took photos and sent them to her, to assure her that her Camaro has been well-preserved. In fact, officers say the vehicle has undergone a near complete restoration.

Officers are now making plans to return the car to its first owner, who still lives in New Jersey and wishes to remain anonymous.

Lucky for Williams, he says he bought "purchaser's insurance" before he went through with the buy, to protect his investment.
