Don't make this a chevy vs ford debate...

After winter I'm jumping back into the world of cars, but this time I'm driving what I want, neither the Z28 or GTA was want I was looking for and I sort of regret buying either of them. I learned a lot from having them, but only because they broke down constantly...RIP.

There are 3 cars I am still drooling over, there is no reason to list all 3 since one is around the $10k range, which is waaaay to much for me.

I've decided my next car will be one of these:





I'm not asking you guys to pick it out, I many months away from having one and I just want to hear everything you guys know about them. Not technical stuff I can look that up, but you guys have had way more experience with these, how do they feel, fun factor, repair costs, etc. I plan on keeping this car for a long time!!! unlike the others

I've said for soooo long my next car would be a 5 speed, but I'm not hacking up a Monte, I have yet to sit in either car or ride in them for that matter, but I'd like to hear what you guys think. I know a few of yinz have had foxes before so I want to hear what you liked about them.

My plans for either car is a DD car with enough balls to hang with the modern stangs or newer fbodies...I want 13s and I don't care how I get there...as long as it's N/A. I'm sure the 305 would have to go in the monte but I'm ok with that.

Fox. You can't beat the bang for the buck. There is SOOOO much available for them, and for very cheap.

I had mine time in one:



I do like the Monte Carlo, and there is a huge following of G-bodys here in Pittsburgh, but you'd have to do a bit more work, and it won't be as nimble.

A couple of downsides to the Fox is the rear drums and 4 lug wheels. These can be taken care of easily enough, though. Also, they are a bit more loose in the rear than a Camaro. If I were to buy another Fox, I'd go with an 89 -- last year without the airbag and first year for mass air. Why does the airbag thing matter? No tilt wheel.

What do you mean no tilt wheel? I've heard this before and I'm a little unsure what you guys mean. You mean I can't move my wheel up and down? No air bag doesn't bother me however but I'm sure I'll have a harder time finding a nice 89 when there are many other years out there.

Also another thing bothering me is that the monte carlo happens to be one of 3 dream cars I have. If I get one I might be a little too picky and end up buying something on impulse because I want one so bad.

This time around I really want a 5 speed car, and the fox being more nimble seems a lot more fun. I know they arent' really equal cars to compare but nobody said this was going to be easy.

No tilt wheel means it's not adjustable. It's fixed, and kind of awkward, but obviously not impossible to drive. Just a nuisance. I'd still try and stick with 89, but 90-92 would be fine as well. The only thing about the 93's are the hypereutectic pistons which are weaker than the previous years and won't take the same boost. My 93 was a dog even with gears and all bolt-ons. I couldn't get out of the 14's or triple-digit traps. I had a ton of track passes to do it, but I just couldn't. I was cutting some nice 60's, though.

Anything is really an upgrade from my 305. I do like all the aftermarket support I'm seeing. I'd hate to swing one way without looking at the G-body but the mustang is probably more my style at the moment. I'm dying to see why these manual cars are so fun. :cool:

Either one is a good choice. I'd drive either one.

The Mustang is sportier and cheap to get parts for.
G bodies can be made into decent handling street and strip warriors.

Funny how the Mustangs in that body style looked like the Escort of those years, just on steroids.



My friend had one, it was a beast! orginally built for racing my friend bought it when his friends couldn't afford to finish it for racing and had moved on. If i remember correctly it had a balanced and blueprinted block, all stainless exhaust and nitro with the retarding switch. Looked really similar to the black one posted above.

I remember it was a blast! He could get that thing sideways in 3rd gear and could walk that thing forever it seemed. He parked it for a winter one year in his barn and it collapsed on him sadly destroying a 67 cougar too

I don't even know why I made this thread, I guess I was hoping for you guys to talk me into the monte but I'm set on the stang.

The only Monte that I have much interest in is the Aerocoupe. I would rock one of those pro-touring style.

Maybe even a Grand Prix 2+2...

I think that if you have more money to spend, then give the MC a try. Otherwise, the Mustang is a dime a dozen, and you'll have better luck finding a cleaner one, cheaper.

I never really pushed my car in the corners so I don't really know how my Z28handled compared to the fox.
The Camaro remains more neutral, and is not as tail-happy. There are 3-link conversions for the Fox to keep them planted, but they are $$$. Check out Maximum Motorsports.

I would go with the 5.0 but get an LX notchback..I love the looks of them. And actually if you can find an older nice restored or rebuilt 5.0 your going to have a modern classic.

but if you were to go for a hatch..the 93 Cobra's were awsome. and some you can have for a bargain.

Now the thing is..your going to have fun with the Mustang..but if you want somethign a little set apart from the cookie cutter everyone has one go with what I said above or seach it out more..

a pace car? or even my favorite..SVO mustang. There are a lot out there that can be had for cheap money but give a little more coolness to the car , heck I have seen Saleen and other specialty cars out there for cheap money so lok into it:D

and speaking of turbo's..and you mentioned the Monte..what about its bad ass sister??

Basically something the Monte could never be..this car has a good following..good aftermarket and its rare and the last thing is..its bad ass. when people see it..its like striking fear into people..
Basically wherever you roll and the people know what it is they will give you a lot of respect.GN's just have that bad ass reputation!
and for what it would cost to mod a mustang you can have a 12 second GN for cheap..

I'm a diehard Chevy man...but I would also say the Mustang would be a better bang for the buck and much more "upgradable" on a decent budget. I have alot of buddies who still swear by the stangs and love them....

Only way to make a Monte better is to drop a 350 crate into it. But right there you're looking at 4-6 grand with all accessories.

Though, I guess if you can fit into one a fox would be a better buy. Riding in the back seat of an LX just ruined the Fox for me. 5'9.. and had a kink in my neck for days after that.

Though the GNX might be badass, it's not what I want. The Turbo might make it quick but it's not for me. I think a few of you are forgetting I'm 19 and $10k is out of the question...but if I had that money.

Anyways, I'm looking to spend around $5000 when it's all said and done, nothing more because I'm still too young for anything overly nice.

The SVO isn't really what I'm looking for either, not just because it's a 2.3L Turbo but because it also looks a little funny to me. The Cobra would be nice but it probably won't happen. The thing is, nobody here has Fox bodies...maybe it's just my little area but I don't see them much. I see more thirdgens than foxes.

Is this what I'm dealing with in this price range...super molested cars?

That doesn't seem too bad, but it's speed density (unless he upgraded to mass air).

It looks clean, and that's what matters most. You could easily get it painted one color to snazz it up (I hate the two-tone).

I'd offer $3500.
