If you are reading this while dressed in three layers of flannel and have just shoveled the snow your driveway, we apologize in advance for the next line...
In San Diego, it's now sunny, 72 degrees, and we've just spent six hours behind the wheel of the new Pontiac G8. We may need some sun screen, but we're also going to need a plastic surgeon to remove the smile from our face.
Actually, several surgeons are needed, as there are a ton of smiles as we introduce the G8 performance sedan to a large group of automotive media. Their collective comment... "WOW!!!"
You've probably already seen some of the reviews on-line, so we were feeling pretty good when we started the event. But, it's very special when a journalist tells you that he is seriously considering trading in his BMW 5-series on the G8.
After driving both V6s and V8s through some of the most glorious twists and turns in the country, we can understand the enthusiasm. Power, handling, steering responsiveness...this thing rides like it's on rails and the looks have the some of the locals doing double-takes.
At a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 8, every car is inspected. Usually, it's a cursory five-second look and then a wave to move on. The Red Hot G8 GT we're driving pulls up and suddenly the guard motions for us to stop. He says he has questions for us. Visions of being "detained for questioning" start filling our heads.
In that stern, arms-across-chest stance that we've all seen a little too often, he starts asking us about the car: horsepower, transmission, colors, price. The traffic is backing up behind us as we dutifully answer every question. After all, we're cooperating with homeland security, right?
After the drive, we find out from some of our media friends who were behind us that, by the time the guard got their car, he was calling his friends over and giving them the entire sales pitch about the G8. Now THAT'S making an impression!
And you'll soon be able to make some impressions of your own. We are pleased to report that the very first load of the First 888 cars have left the port, bound for east coast dealers. A second load of First 888s for the west coast should ship next week, followed very quickly by several thousand more.
For those lucky enough to get one of those first cars and can't resist "airing it out" a bit, let's just hope that your local police officer will be as impressed as the U.S. Border Patrol.
