public feedback on 5th gen

I was at a fairly well attended car show in Chesapeake, Va today (one of the few I actually go to each year) and there were a surprising number of camaros there from all generations, including a few Police Cruisers! I was excitedly sharing my experiences of having seen the new camaro in person and much to my surprise, most, if not all of the camaro owners were not interested at all in the new one! They prefered their older versions and the ones in progress they have now. I was just taken back by their comments since they are "real camaro owners". Has anyone else experienced this at local car shows? Guess you guys and gals will have to wow them in with the real deal. Chevy needs to get the ad campaigns going if they want to reel these folks in.:hello:

I've heard of people not liking the 5th gen. They tend to say it is either "too retro" or "GM ruined the design" or some other such heresy.

Personally, I prefer the 1st-3rd gen and the 5th gen design...I never did care much for the 4th gen design..too smooth and sport-car like instead of brutish musclecar.

And I suspect the 4th gen owners that say that it is "too retro" prefer their sportcar design over the way the Camaro was meant to be, a musclecar.

If they are die-hard Xgen Camaro fans chances are they will only like there gen Camaro. I think most die-hard Camaro fans like the 5th gen.
This is expected IMO...I can see people looking at it and hating on the 5th gen for whatever reason they come up with. It's stupid IMO, I'm a Camaro fan...regardless of the model year. Cars evolve and you can't get stuck on only ONE generation.
I would almost guarantee that none of them have seen the new one in person.

When you see it in person, your opinion on it changes. :D

You took the words right out of my mouth!
My brother has a 4th gen and he doesnt like the 5th gen at all.
My wife actully thinks the Challenger looks better than the Camaro.
I personally wish i could see it in person because alot of these pics that are out dont do the car any justice at all.
But there are some pics out there that made me fall in love with the car as soon as I seen them.

This one doesnt look real but its still a good shot.

There is a bunch more but I dont have them saved.

Either that or they haven't seen Transformers. Seeing it in motion makes your opinion change, too. :p

They'll come around. Give it time. ;)
The public will see this 5th gen and put it on a pedistal like most new hot cars. Especially, with all the hype. I can see owners of the 4th gen that are haters will envy the new 5th gen and develop a middle child syndrome. I like to imbrace new technology and new designs. I like the 4th gen, but I couldnt go for one with the new 5th gen coming, regardless to price.
This reminds me of a little happening many moons ago, back when a certain someone was still talking to me...
She never was much into cars..and didn't like it when I went on a random car-convo rampage. But she said she either wanted a Mustang(Yellow, I believe) or a H2 for her next car. I showed her the 5th gen concept site(this was way before the internet was flooded with pictures of it)..and after much coaxing out of me she admitted that the 5th gen was better looking than the Mustang she wanted.

Small victory, but I'll take it.

I would like to say that I like all the different camaro models. I owned most of them, but I think the new camaro is not to be compared with any other car in the history of motor vehicles. And I think everyone will enjoy it, even those that are saying that it doesn't look good, you will see them going for a test drive very soon.

Got that right!!!!

And Cruz,
I was just taken back by their comments since they are "real camaro owners".
I think thats a small portion of people they might all like the car they have. I know I love my 4th gen. I am a "real Camaro owner" (no dig on you cus there are alot of current 4th 3rd 2nd and 1st gen members here :D )But I like the 5th gens.
Heck when the 4th gen came out I did not like it. It did not appeal to me. Till I took a test drive in the one I bought.

Sounds like what happened in the Honda community 2 years ago. Civic fanboys and fangirls hated the new FG chassis. They came to meets or flooded sites like Honda-tech with insults about how it wasn't a true Civic, as if there is a classification for it and how the car would be a huge failure. A year later, I see those same people announcing how they are the proud owner of a "gorgeous" FG or FA.
I agree with what I have read that Fbodfather said:
50% will love it; 50% will hate it and 75% of those who hate it will love it within a year.

Although I think more than 50% love this car;)

Good quote. fbodfather put it into the best words.

Yeah, that's the respone they were expecting....

Definitely. The actual response was far better than GM was hoping for.
I think he said that before the 5th gen was introduced. I will try to find where he said that if I can.

Yeah, he did. I heard it straight from his mouth to my ears. :D

And BTW, you just made the 20,000th post on this site.
WOOT! :roxor:
Here it is. Way back in 2005. Makes some great points.

No question that styling is a big issue. It's subjective, but a big issue nevertheless.

Keep in mind that you are only starting to see the influence of Bob Lutz and Ed Wellburn. Also keep in mind that a lot of what's transpired over the past few years can be directly linked to "Brand Management" and the likes of Ron Zarella and company.......and the damage has been extensive.

Let me say this: I've recently been privileged to see a design review for the next 4 years........and I gotta tell you........WOW...........there ARE big changes coming.......and for those of you who hated the chrome bar on our cars and trucks....and the 'ninja' look of Chevy trucks.......they're gone.......

As to clincs.......the right way to do a clinic is to do a 'blind' clinic looking for people who own the car or truck in question.......the competitive equivalent of that car or truck (in Camaro's case, Mustang and Eclipse)......and about 25 other parameters based on where you live, what magazines you subscribe to......what your lifestyle happens to be based on limited private info......etc.

We pretty much understand what the Camaro enthusiast community wants (and that's one of the reasons I travel so much to Camaro/Firebird/Mustang events) or meet with enthusiasts as I travel on the auto show circuit. You'd be surprised at how much opinions are pretty much the same except for styling........there are those who prefer the individual generations.....

Let me also say this: It's occurred to me that no matter what we do with Camaro or Corvette: 50% will love it; 50% will hate it........and 75% of those who hate it will love it within a year.

ONE LAST THOUGHT: Please....I'm begging you......do NOT judge a car or truck from pictures you see on the internet or in magazines. Invariably, people proclaim 'hate' for something (and use shameful language) only to change their opinions, for the most part.....after seeing it in person.
