I am confused as to the differences between the SS and the Z28 in this generation, specifically in 99 onwards when they both had an LS1

IMO it was more of an apperance package. All he cars started out as Z28 and are Z28 according to the VIN and insurance. Sure it had a handling package, but it wasn't much major.

IMO there should have been more to make it more than the Z28 such as LS6 or something like that. In the same way a GT and a Cobra are different.

I've had both. There is virtually no difference. The exterior is obvious (hood, wing, wheels), but underneath, the SS got a couple little suspension tweaks as well as a supposedly better flowing exhaust - not enough to make a difference, IMO. It's mostly a bunch of marketing hype, but with the way things are now, the SS is a lower model.

If you read that thread, you'll notice that Scott S. says the biggest difference is the handling performance.

The SS handled and drove noticeably better than the Z28. It also had 275 tires on front/back. the Z only got 245's.


definitely nothing major speed wise. maybe a tenth faster if anything.

IMO the Z was faster at the drag strip because you could get a Z that was light, but the SS was loaded up and heavier.

The handling part was supposedly due to the orange DeCarbon shocks installed. Other than that even the suspension bits were rpetty much the same unless you opted for the SLP stuff. But like some LS6 blocks ending up in Fbodies this wasn't always the case my Z for instance recieved the DeCarbon shocks from the factory.

The 16" rims were standard on the Z's as mentioned, freer flowing muffler (debatable on whether or not it was). The Ram air hood with matching air box base along with the rims spoiler and other looks package. Another difference was gearing. Z's got 2.73's with 3.23's optional (automatic transmissions) wheras the SS's got 3.23's standard for the same trans.

The faster cars were probably the 1SC "strippers" (not sayin that because mine is one) like Brandon said being lighter. Had a coworker with an auto SS. Mine was faster even when we switched drivers and despite me having 2.73's vs his 3.23's.

your definitely right on the weight thing. A Z could certainly be faster at the track.

I do remember test driving a 99Z vs a 99SS and the handling was significantly different and the SS felt much better. I don't remember what options they had though.

My '01 Z also had the deCarbons.

Another thing to keep in mind with the gearing was that all the manual cars (Z28 and SS) came with 3.42's. The 2.73 equiped Z28 came with a steel driveshaft as opposed to the aluminum shafts on the 3.23 & 3.42 cars.

I do remember test driving a 99Z vs a 99SS and the handling was significantly different and the SS felt much better. I don't remember what options they had though.
There were some changes to the suspensions of the SS and WS6 cars in 2000. The 98 & 99 cars were a bit more aggressive than their 00-02 counterparts. My friend has a 99 WS6 and when I had my 00 SS, there was a very noticeable difference in ride and the actual height of the car.

Remember alot of the handling could have been from the tire combination alone. 245/55 16's feel a hell of alot different than a 275/45 17 going around a corner.
